Senate Unable To Name Chairman Os I. C. C. Today (T'nlted Press Staff Correspondent) Washington, nec 19—(Special to Daily Democrat) -Senators Hiram Johnson. Calif., and Capper, Kansas today joined supporters of Senator Couzens, Michigan, for th# chairmanship of the interstate commerce committee, when balloting was resumed In the senate. The first ballot of the da'V however failed to break the dentflock. Washington, Dec. 19—(Special to Daily’Democrat)—President Coolidge was notilled today by senate administration leaders that Senator Smith, South Carolina, democrat, would be elected chairman of the senate Interstate commerce committee. Senator Watson, Indiana, told Mr. Coolidge during a conference at the white house, that he expected Mr. Smith would be elected today. Watson predicted the votes of Senators Norris and Howell. Nebraska, would break, the deadlock. Miles, for years assistant superintendent of the state reformatory, today assumed active charge of the institution, succeding George A. H. Shideler, who died several days ago. Miles entered the service of the state 20 years ago as a guard at the old reformatory at Jeffersonville.
