We hav In < om<> each day "in every way, better and bettor," True we have h-fd the mro«les and occasionally the mumps but at that we are healthy and strom-. We might make a little <<>n«. -don by admitting that once upon * time. In our own little city, we almost worshiped the great god bod*.' and had nineteen temples I wherein to worship him, but that is now almost a forgotten memory. Wc have had long years of unemancipated women but now they can vote as they darn pie*"'. We have had periods nf civic houseileaniug wherein we beat the rugs with a feather duster. We have promoted industries and have found 'out that "all is not gold that glitters.” We have had growing pains and We have had little disasters that have given us colera morbic uneasin- ss. But all those things have been but pimples on the body politic. To be truthful we have added a little here and a little there and the last eighty years have been bully years. Ono could write of them to the instructive edification of those v. ho live in foreign parts. If we would now count our blessings we would need an adding machine. Look 'at our streets, every one of them paved. Look at our residences and our shade trees and our flower gardens and our back lot gardens and our water and light systems arid forty I eleven kinds of conveniences. Look at our stores and public buildings. l.o<>k at our industries. Look at our ■ wonderful geographical position and vtragetic railroad situation. Look at our marvelous agricultural surround-
11 Ings, book at our churches and our Il schools. Look us in .the face and | see registered there, those lights of I Christian countenaces. but l| what’s use of going farther? We ' | mean not the be boastful, Wo are " | only grateful. Even so, being so, this grateful business ought to bring !us some beneficial results. Perhaps i towit: What would be the matter with i a little concerted effort to increase | our industrial payrolls? Would it be ; of some advantage to have some exj cellent business citizens unlock and I imaginations and their pocketbooks ■ and build some dwelling houses and I mayhap some four and five room I apartment houses? Would it make I anybody mad if we had another inkeep our usual distance ahead of Bluffton? Would it be a curse to the community to have a beautiful and ! commodious community building? We reckon that it is up to this generation to keep the home fires burning. At any rate whatever we do or do 1 not do, suppose that we keep up our I feet upon the ground, forget not the past. Suppose we make no effort to i strew tacks i« the roadway of good fellowship. Faults we may have' a plenty, but we have many Virtues. Common sense and justice tells us that if we will “watch our step’’ we will bo rewarded bye. and bye. —Will Hope. ______ —• The Porter Studio thanks you for your patronage and wishes you a Merry Christmas.
