Mr. Harry Stover and MisS Cecile Trenary, of Bluffton, spent Sunday in this city as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Groves. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Clino, of Monroeville, visited friends and shopped here today. Mr. and Mrs. Homer McKean, and daughter returned to their home at Pleasand Lake, after spending the past five weeks with the former’s brother, Dr. McKean at Linn Grove. Mr. McKean, who was operated upon a 1 few weeks ago is getting along nicely. Otto Marshall visited friends at ' Bluffton last evening. Nie Sheffer Again Makes Appeal F<r His Freedom Auburn, Dec. 10.—Cory Nie Shes- . fer, who was sentenced last January . to serve a life term in prison for the , double murder of James W. Sheffer , and Cora Sheffer, his brother and sis- , I ter-ir.-law, of this city, has just made a new appeal which he hopes will secure his release from prison. The appeal is contained in a letter , received by Attorney Howard Mountz, of Garrett, special prose- , cutor in the Sheffer ease. Nie again ■ asserts his innocence and asks what the court intends to do toward ob taining his freedom. KIRKLAND H.S. DEFEATS BERNE > _________ Kirkland Township Lads Win Sixth Victory Os Season, 32-7 The Kirkland high school basketbull team journeyed to the town of Berne where they defeated the high school five of that place Friday night, the final ■ score being 32 to 7. The score at the end of the first halt was 3 to 5 with Kirkland in the lead. Kirkland took the lead soon after the start of the game* when Ernst tossed the ball through tha hoop from the foul line. After a few more minutes of play a member of the Berne team dropped one in from the field. This put Bern§ in the lead 2 to 1. Kirkland came back with a field goal making the score 3 to 2 with the green and gold leading. Berne registered a point from the foul line tying the score. Krkland registered another field goal shortly before the half ended. Kirkland came back strong in the second half steadily widening the gap. Berne scored but once from the field during the second half, scoring their remaining two points from the foul line. This is six victories out of seven starts for the Kirkland five. In the preliminary the Berne girls defeated the Kirkland girls 16 to 8. B—An8 —An increase in civil war pensions was advocated by Secretary Work, of the interior department, in his annual report submilted to the President. “The ravages of time,” said the secretary, "have now overcome these survivors of the civil war, and tn their old age it is my belief that the pensioning of them should no longer be based upon a Showing of disability duo to wounds and disease. On th< contrary both the veterans and widows should receive a pension from the government after having reached a certain age and the pension paid to them should be adequate to fully support them. “I, therefore, recommend that some legislation be enacted by congress to increase the pensions of civil war veterans and their widows, thereby more fully. recognizing the debt the government owes them for the serv-
