Tho even persyrlbes how they must get to and from school and the state provides punishment lor the parents of children who do not carry out its orders for attendance. With all this, however, we find the schools improving, though at times it may seem to us that they "go to seed" on soino subjects. There has been a danger for some time now that they would forget some of the things not counted as practical and give too much time to the extremes of practicability. A really educated person should like literature, have some appreciation for the artistic and if inclined to like jazz music, should at least be able to sit through the real melodies, such as "Home Sweet Home” and "The Heart Bowed Down.” It the children are getting too much saw and hatchet educating and too little of better things; if they are getting too much about making strawberry preserves and too little about history and civics, we can still interfere; for the state's authority is assumed only by our tacit consent.
