KLAN ISSUE IN ELECTION LOOMS (By Fraser Edwards) (V. I’. Staff Correspondent) Washington, Nov. 19—While politicians are appraising the posslblllt* ie< of national political participation by the Ku Khix Klan as the result of its victories in last week's election, mem hers of congress can find no way to avoid contact with the klan issue which many of them fear will be tl.e year’s worst bugaboo. The K. K. K. probably will get b•fore congress in two ways. ThC'i are: 1. In the Mayfield case, involvin': the right of Senator Earle B. Mayfield of Texas to bis seat if, ns lias been alleged, he is a member of th'* K. K. K. or subscribes to its oath. 2. Through the activities of the National Vigilance association, which lias avowed its intention of putting through laws against masking, secrecy of memberships ami for federal prosecution of mob violence. Mayfield Fight Expected Senator Spencer of Missouri, will In chairman of the senate privileges nrd elections committee, which will handle the Mayfield contest, if the case is pressed. Up to the present, no formal presentation of charges affecting TJayfield's right to his seat has occurred, but anti-klan factions in who Texas assert the fight will be I made. Klansmen have been quot< <1 as saying that a. southern senate.?, who took a leading part in the Newberry fight, will champion Mayfield. ; In this case efforts will be ma< <’ to subordinate the klan issue and to decide Mayfield’s right to his seat on purely legal grounds relating to use of money in the campaign and the carrying out of cretain electi< n laws. But the klan question will be constantly in the background. The activities of the newly form< d National Vigilance committee are e” citing some comment in Washington. The organization, which has headquarters here, sets forth that it is composed of men prominent in educational, business and professional lit». It urges nation-wide support lor lavs to prevent masking; to require all organizations to make public names ol all their members, and for drastic federal laws to punish persons taking part in mob violence. Thus the klan question is to he agitated before congress from botli sides. In view of klan success in the recent election, congressmen are 'distrubed at the prospect of having to face this issue .which involves so much of radical and religions pr •- I Judice along with purely political issues. o Don't buy your Xmas Photos until you have seen our special oilers for Xmas.—EDWARD’S STUDIO.
