How Can The Average Man Get Ahead True Storie* Os Wage Earner* And Salaried Men And Women Who Have Found The Road to Financial Independence (By Samuel O. Rice, Educational Director Investment Bankers Association of America)
The tale of the lonesome bond and the business woman who Is seeking a Bia te for it. A business woman, formerly a frbool teacher but now employed in the offices of a large publicity utility company, gave her experience as a email investor to be the fifth in this cries showing how average, everyday folks can get ahead. “I bought Liberty Bonds during the war, SIOO of every issue," said the business woman. "Somehow 1 thought so much of them I couldn't bear the idea of sacrificing them /or a fur coat or a trip to California, as some of the other girls in the office did. But after I had them paid for I ceased systematic saving. 1 put away a few dollars only when 1 didn't want anything very badly or had earned extra money. "Even haphazard and meager savings accumulated 1300 in three years. 1 hadn't thought much about investing it until a salesman for automobile stock tried to interest me. His stock was $lO a share. I didn't bite because that salesman was the same man who had taken the first SSO I ever saved. He gave me another kind of automobile stock for it, after he
The Fourth Down By Willie Pont Another fine football day. Hope it is like this next Saturday. Mr. Leadpencil, of Wabash, evidently thinks that the D. H. S. football team is in a class with the Podunk and Pumpkin Center outfits. He says Wabash admits defeat but goes on to say that his pets are playing a harder schedule than most schools, and points to Huntington, playing "such schools as Decatur and some of those and Huntington has not overwhelmed itself with glory on the number of games won.” That is about the “wisest crack” that has percolated through .Leady’a Larynx since the pollen began flying from the rag weed this fall. Our Yellow Jackets can match his Hillclimbers any day in the week and beat them at least half the

had shown me how rich 1 would be if I could have put SSO into General Motors, Ford or other automobile business. My SSO of stock had paid one dividend, $5 and then hit bottom. 1 lost SSO, and all my dreams of a safe, 10 per cent investment. "Somebody suggested putting my S3OO into bonds. Probably 1 am stupid, but it never occurred to me that ordinary folks could buy bonds, except Überties, perhaps. I spoke to the boss. He referred me to an established investment banking house. They told me I could buy a SSOO bond by paying down my S3OO and then S2O for nine months and about sls the tenth month. In less than a year the bond was all mine and now every 15th of March and September I clip a coupon from that bond and get $17.50 real money for it. “I figured out the other day that I when that bond matures in 1942 it ! will have paid me S7OO and will still |be worth SSOO. And if something dreadful should happen I can take that bond to the bank and get money lon it. I am saving $25 a month now jto get a companion for my SSOO 1 bond. It’s lonesome.”
| time. And we lost seven of last year’s I first string players through graduaI tion too. I.eady, did you know that |we had one player on the all-state I team last year, one on the second allstate team and two received honorable mention? Look up the records and then when you want an easy game for your pets, you'd better pick on Bluffton, Columbia City, or someone in their class and leave the Yellow Jackets alone, because their sting is deadly. And we might add that Emerson of Gary finally emerged victorious from a mighty battle with Wabash last Saturday, by a slender margain of 42 to 0. Bud White, plunging fullback on the Yellow Jacket eleven was unable to practice yesterday evening on account of a big boil on his left wrist. His hand was swollen to nearly twice normal size. However, Bud says he will be ready for the Logansport game Saturday. Jack Teeple was not out for scrimmage yesterday evening either. He

The Catholic boys are improving rapidly, and C. C. H. S. is going to have a surprise party when they Journey down hero for their second battle with Coach Center's men a week from Friday. It won't be another 56-0 score, Don Farr and Doane Dorwin saw Tommy Moore, former athletic coach at the local high school, while they were at Indiana University last weekend. Tommy is studying medicine at the state university. He sent his re gards to the boys and wished them the very best luck. Above all he is anxious that the Yellow Jackets beat Ixigansport next. Saturday. Logansport is near Tommy’s homo town. He is following the progress of the 1 >oal team with interest this fall. Since the Wabash high school team is hopelessly out of luck this year, Leady lias gone to boosting the Wabash’ Ramblers, an independent eleven, which has been going like a house afire. We suppose it will < :ily be by accident if the Ramblers are defeated now. We're not going to ride you any more today. Leady, old fellow. We might impose upon your good nature.

Notre Dame Grid Team Is Talk of the East Today (By Henry L. Farrell, United Press Staff Correspondent.) New York, Oct. 23. —With Just about, the finest, team that has been seen in the east for four or five years, Notre Dame’s great eleven monopolizes the conversation wherever football is being discussed here. No major eastern team has been so convincingly thrashed In recent years as I’rlncton was Saturday by Knute Rockne’s Dame eleven. Higher scores than 25 to 2 may have been| piled up but it cannot be recalled when any western team made a star member of the sacred "Big Three” look so completely amateurish and powerless. Notre Dame has been a most important factor in eastern football for a number of years and in the past coaches gathered to wise themselves up on Notre Dame's latest methods of using the forward pass. Against Princeton, however, Notre Dame used the pass only as a threat and for an occasional diversity of attack. “' "The Micks” this year beat the Tigers by straight football and a running game in which deception, delay and fake were used with more perfection than the famed Houghton system ever duped at Harvard. Miller, Layden, Crowley and Stuhldreher compromise the finest backfield that has been seen in a decade in the east. Bishop Leete called Rev. C. H. Smith, pastor of the local Methodist church, and told him he had been appointed as district superintendent of the Goshen district, and wanted to know if he would accept. Rev. Smith told him he was not a candidate for the place, had some things he wanted to do in Bluffton church before finally leaving here but that he was subject to the will of the higher authorities, and accepted the call. A meeting of four of the superintendents of the state, with Bishop Leete was held at Indianapolis Friday and there were four or five men considered. When District Superintendent Martin left Indianapolis no definite decision had been made by the bishop, but as he had some other matters to look after in this city he was at the parsonage home when Bishop Leete called up. Mr. Smith is an incessant worker, has great capacity for doing things, and this fact is not only known in the churches where he has been pastor but is recognized throughout the conference. Rev. C. H. Smith came to this city from Peru in April, 1919, having been here four years and seven months. In that time great things have been done under his guidance. He has been foremost in all things, and much of the actual work has been done with his own mind and hands. He is a cleancut Christian gentleman whom to know is an honor. He started his pastorate at Doan in 1906 and was there three years. From there he went to Markle and was there four years; then Greenfield two years and Peru four years, taking the place made vacant by Rev. Arnold, who went to Kokomo. —— -• The Sea.
