Life Building, Kansas City, Mo The window washer's union of Chicago has agreed to an advance in wages which brings them in a dollar an hour. Why waste time and money going to college? Merchants it's time to advertise. People are looking for fall wearing apparel, for clothes and shoes for the school children, for the things need ed for the fall and winter season, for coal and stoves and other articles. Tell them you have them and invite them to deal with you. It will pay and it will make everybody happier. A. D. Burkett, who until he was twenty years old had scarcely been out of Adams county is acquiring a national reputation with his “Good Will" poems. His aged father, Ben Burkett lives in Monroe township and is one of the well known citizens of the county. He should be proud of his talented son as we all are for he is striving to give to the people just what we need most now —good will—and in such doses that we will all absorb it and live it The coal commission has evidently failed to prevent the strike of anthracite miners, set for September 1. The attitude in Washington seems to be a boycott more than anything else. In other words you will just get along without hard coal by using soft coal and thus force the operators and miners to come to terms. There is one thing about it and that is the people can get along without anthracite easier titan they can without bituminous coal and they will it they have to. If they get in the habit they may never return to hard coal The General Electric with a force of nearly four hundred people is going right along and with no intentions of reducing the number, so far as any decision up to date. In fact the indications and the expectations are that the number will be added to in a few weeks and the production nearly doubled. Other local plants will increase forces soon and the next several months should be very prosperous ones for us. Get up and get busy boys. Advertise and push. It pays big dividends.
Under the title ‘‘The road away from revolution” Woodrow Wilson, former president, in the Atlantic Monthly, concludes with: ‘‘The sum of the whole matter is this, that our civilization cannot survive materially unless it be redeemed spiritually. It can be saved only by becoming permeated with the spirit of Christ and being made free and happy by the practices which spring out of that spirit. Only thus can discontent be driven out and all the shadows lifted from the road ahead.” The article is the first from his pen since he retired as president and his challenge is worth real consideration. If you want your opinions printed in the Daily Democrat, be sure to let us know either by signing the articles or by telling us about it for we cannot print anonymous articles. We are in receipt of one signed, ‘‘lma Booster” concerning the house building problem which we arc bolding with the hope that whoever sent it in will authorize us to print it. We like to have opinions of others and we believe in "friendly criticism" but wo
must know from what source it comes. You don’t need to agree with us. A variance of opinion makes it more Interesting and benelicial. Send . them In but sign your name. We will •. hold the name out if you wish 4t but *' your article is usually more helpful if your name is used. There is no doubt that we need ’ fifty or a hundred houses here or is ) there the least chance that they 9 would not be routed. The town is ; filled to overflowing and the demand J for houses now is the greatest in the I history of the city. It will Increase ’ during the next few weeks. With the opening of the sugar campaign about October Ist, with the increased force at the G. E. and the foundries and other places, the demand will be even greatre than now. What are we going to do about it? We can't sit ' idly by and say—“ Let the other fellow lake care of it,” for it’s our problem too. The people who would help boost Decatur are anxiously inquiring and offering to assist and we should buckle in and do something—build a hundred houses in the next few months. Os course such a campaign would mean a prosperous period for every one besides furnishing places for our people to live. ■ ■ ; Wizards On Vacation (United Press Service) Ishpeming. Mich., Aug. 25 —(Special to Daily Democrat) —The vacation tour of Thomas A. Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone went ahead in upper Michigan today, the trio invading L’Anse, site of the Ford model timber mills. Edison’s slight cold and sore finger were declared only “incidentals" to such a vacation trip, and the “electrical wizard” was declared in the best of physical condition. Members of the party‘denied rumors he was “ill” and asserted that he is "absolutely O. K.” After camping at L’Anse for a day or two, the party will probably board Ford’s new and palatial 300 foot yacht which arrived at L’Anse Monday. A trip on the boat through the copper country is contemplated. o — This Man Intends to Keep It in the House “In May or June. 1913, I sent to you and got four bottles which were worth many dollars to me. t r ; The People’s Voice ' Sunday School Lesion Reviewed 1 Editor Democrat: — I In the Sunday School lesson of August 19th, we find many mental phenomenas. Tho human mind of I today has the same characteristics i that it had two thousand years ago. r Up to this time history does not re- ! cord many deaths when men gave up their lives for an Invisible cause. They died for the things that were 1 seen. His Master instructor led the way. Men could die in battle but the passions of hate and greed were the motives. Hate and greed are somewhat in evidence today. But to die for the love of an enemy was incomprehensible. The human mind operates under two distinct influences. Each individual has the right to choose his motive power. So far as the lower animals are concerned, man has only been able to discover one motive power called instinct. The mind of man is mighty when contrasted by material forces. It graples with mathamatical problems with a great degree of accuracy. It

is successful to lome degree in measuring the force of gravity. The force of electricity. The weight of the air, the volume of heat in the sunlight, but when it comes to the invisible forces that operate on mind instead ( of matter the whole problem becomes an hypothesis. Nations rise and fall and the historian gives out f only surface information. To study i the influence of some of the invisible forces on the mind and body a “Body • and Soul" clinic has been formed in > New York. The method is combin- . ed of psycology, medical science and i religion, the one or the other being ■ styssed as the case may demand. i The clinic is not trying to promote science, or theology, or religion, but the health of the patient. Instead of • an individual patient w.e have a world patient. We need a world doctor. Stephen saw this, and he tried to point the way to the world Doctor. The secular press is awaking to the sickened condition of the world, and , one editor salik “We do not pretend 1 to know how this state of mind can be cured. It is a moral disease that should be studied. Probably it is a price we are paying. for a materalistic conception of happiness. We need an evangel of light.” When the
. secular press begins to cry out for > the church to do just what Saul did , "an evangel of light.” it is time for after he participated in the stoning , of Stephen. He laid down his creed I and took up the real life. This Is an • Invitation to any one who is hunger- ‘ ing for the light, to join the Sunday 1 School class that occupies the space just in front of the pulpit in the M. 1 E. ehnreh. You can step down the force of electricity by conducting it through a transformer, but you can not step down the Life Giving Force by conducting it through a creed. It does not reach the heart that way. It reaches the heart through faith. , W. J.
