Good Oil Wells Shot Near Chattanooga, Ohio Well number 4 on the leases of the Liberty Tp. Oil Co., near Chattanooga was shot Monday afternoon and gives indication of becoming one of the best producing well* in that territory. Well number 5 is now being drilled and may come in about next week some time. Every one of the wells in that field is a producer. The well which was shot on Monday gives Indications of being a good one. The well was drilled 29 feet in-1 to the sand and Monday morning a stand of 700 feet of oil'was in the tubing before it had ever l>een shot.] The strong gas pressure cleaned out the well that morning, causing it to gush. A stream of oil shot to a height of at least 25 feet above the ground that morning. After the well had been shot Mon-' day afternoon, a strong flow of oil and gas emitted from the hole. A charge of only 60 quarts of nitro-gly-' cerine was used. After the shooting.] the oil shot up far above the top of the derrick. That there is much fluid in this hole was demonstrated by the

fact that very little water emitted' from Ihe fine spray of oil. Monday night before the well had been piped.] it gushed for a second time, but a short time. There la also a strong flow of gas escaping from the well. Five trials were necessary before the well was successfully shot. The first attempt was with the “go-devil," but this did not discharge the load of nitro. It is thought that the gas pressure may have been so strong that the impetus of the dropping go-devil was too greatly retarded to set off . the cup. Two attempts were then I made to shoot the well by dropping torpedoes, set off with two-minute time fuses. Both of these attempt* | failed. A fourth attempt was made to shoot the well when a torpedo was ' lowered into the well ami was con- ! nected with a wire, through which an electric current was sent. This I attempt also failed. The fifth at- ' tempt was successful, when another I torpedo was lowered and set off from . the storage battery of a Ford touring -' car. $ -|—|—WANT ADS EARN—I—I—S l‘ o DANGERS OF A COLD Decatur People Will Do Well to Heed Them Many bad cases of kidney trouble result from a cold or chill. Lewis, president of the 1 United Mine Workers, in a supple- . mentary proposal, pointing out that : the operators had been checking off on I salatfles for geVenty years 1 for rents, groceryp bills, etc., suggest ed that it was unfair for them to con - tinue the practice unless they per 3 mitted the union to check off for union dues. t Operators Cease Check-off The operators immediately answ-er-t ed this proposal with an agreement t that they would cease their practice. , Union officials had considered it inconceivable that the operators ever would agree to abandoning their check off. The union wanted the checkoff written into the contract so that it would be officially and legally recorded tha tthe operators recognize the union and sanctioned its right to collect dues from employes. The union however, based its chief plea for the checkoff on the fact that the oper ators who own the stores where min ers buy, and houses where they live, took the costs of those things out of the salaries. in Force Many Years The practice has been in.force seventy years merely to facilitate mat ters for both sides. Obesrvers believe that abandonment of the pra< tice will force the operators to install new arrangements for collection of bills, and that this will result in their charging the miners higher prices for their products. President Lewis did not indicate he was willing to abandon his demand for the checkoff in the orignal list he submitted to the coal commission. The orignal demands were for recognition of the checkoff; an eighthour day; a wage increase (amount not stated); other matters be left to checkoff as a minor business, .hutne joint negotations. The proposal for abondonment was contained in a supplemental statement, which pointed to the checkoff as a minor business arragement, which the anthracite perators now enjoy. If Lewis sticks to his agreement to drop the checkoff and sees no other objection to the var ious other phrases of contention it is considered pi -'bable that the two sides may go again into conference to fight out the size of the proposed wage increase. The conference got underway at 10:’20 a.m. Officials of both the miners and operators, seemed optimistic and hoped negotations on a new contract covering wages and working conditions could start in Atlantic City tomorrow.
