Waltera, Atty, for Plaintiff. 2-9-ltl oTried To Buy Off Ohio Woman Mayor Fairport, O„ Aug. 2—Albert Schriegel, awaiting trial behind the bars of Lake county jail, learned about women from the Felrport mayor and justice of the peace. Schrlegel is charged with offering to "buy” protection for a gambling house from Mayor Amy Kaukonen. | Justice of the peace Mabel Walters set his bail at SSOO, but Schriegel couldn't make the raise. He came to "Mayor Amy’s" office one afternoon, according to the affidavit, and offered her a 50-50 proposition. Six hundred new laborers were coming to Fairport to work in the coke ovens, Ije is said to have explained, and a well protected gambling house would bring big returns. "Mayor Amy” agreed and asked Schriegel to bring the money to her office the next afternoon. The would-be gambling boss next day unfurled a huge roll of bills on the mayor's desk. Two seconds later a deputy sheriff and the chief of police stepped out from behind a closet door and placed Schxiegel under arrest. MOOSE TO MEET AT PORTLAND The Portland Moose lodge is looking forward to a big meeting on Friday evening of next week, when it will have as guests the officers and a large delegation of members of the Muncie Lodge Loyal Order of Moose. The Muncie lodge men will be accompanied by its band and a concert will be given on the streets prior to the meeting. The .visitors are coming in the interest of the state convention of the order to be held in Muncie on September 13, 14 and 15, and in which all lodges of Indiana will take part. Aside from the business sessions many entertainment features will be staged including initiations in botli the first and Legion degrees, closing with a big frolic. Dry Well Is Shot Near Linn Grove Well No. 1 on the Reynolds farm west of Linn Grove was shot Tuesday afternoon but failed to show any traces of oil. A charge of only forty quarts of nitro-glycerine was used. Rigging is being put up today to pump the well. A thorough pumping will be given. The prospects of the well cannot be determined t until after the pumping. The well was sunk by the Mason Oil company. Another well by the same company on their leases nearby has been producing from nine to ten barrels daily. Quite a bit of land has been leased in the territory southwest of Linn Grove.
