SCIENTIST LIVES AMONG CHIGGERS TO LEARN HABITS Do you remember when you were a boy how you liked to run oft and go to the berry patch? Weren't the berries good? And weren’t the red welts on your body tine that night, when you found yourself covered with chiggers? They Itched for days, and; nothing seemed to get them off Can’t you feel them yet? Now, what would you think of a man who deliberately went out and silt in a chigger nest, to let them bite > 111111? A great lover of little insects,' / I i r , CHIGGERS! This is a magnified view of a chigger. as he would appear if you looked him in the face. yon say. Or a great scientist. This is exactly what Dr. Henry E.! Ewing of the United States National Museum has done. He has set out to study the life habits of this pest, with the end in view of possibly exterminating it. A chigger, he says, is a small kind, of flea, about 1-200 of an inch long. It does not live on berry plants, but on the blood of rabbits and field mice that hide in tangled thickets. Chiggers are mighty spry on their feet, he finds, and are always ready to bor where there seems to be a meal. Then they dig down along the hairs, and make us swell. Powdered sulphur or strong soap suds on the skin is a good remedy to stop the itching, Dr. Ewell finds. o—5—5—t—WANT ADS EARN—S J J * t want ADS EARN—*—S—-S
