OUR NURSES: — One of the most unjust attacks ever made on a profession was an article aimed at the nursing profession which was published not long ago in Tile Medical Review of Reviews. Tlrere is no nobler work for women than that of the scientifically pr< pared minister to the suffering. There are few occupations so exacting. during the years of preparation or in the years of active service, as nursing. To it have been attracted some of the noblest women of our time. During the recent war, twenty thousand of the thirty-five thousand nurses who belong to the American Nurses' Association volunteered for army or Red Cross work and saw active service. There are average nurses, and there are some few unworthy nurses. Even among the twelve disciples, there was one who betrayed. But the percentage of nurses who are fine, efficient, self-sacrificing women is very high. There are men, women and children in America today who owe their lives not merely to the medical profession, but to the nurses who faithfully watched over them through long hours. During the "flu" epidemic this year and two years ago, there was a shortage of nurses, and many of those who were able to work at all did night duty and day duty, stopping for one hour's sleep, anff frequently going twenty-four and even forty-eight hours without any rest at alt. In public-health work, in emergency hospitals, in large sanitariums and in the home, death would take a f:/r higher toll were it not for the skill and the self-sacrificing spirit of professional nurses—The Delineator. Peru, the county seat of Miami county, has employed a motorcycle "cop" ami among the many men arrested for speeding was the editor of the Wabash Times-Star. The papers at Wabash and Peru are calling the "cop” all kinds of pet names and ask, why should the county employ an outsider to make arrests when the police and sheriff are employed to enforce law. The "cop" who is classed as the "Snail Hunter" fell from his motorcycle Wednesday and suffered a fracture of the leg and nr / u WHOSE FAULT is it if you have dandruff and falling hair? K. S. speculation is rife regarding the rate of speed he himself was traveling a when the accident -occurred. The police and sheriff should enforce the speed law and there is no reason why an outsider should be brought into ] a community to make arrests. The safe way out is to observe the speed laws and there will not be any ar- ' z rests or smash-tips. j t The Northern Indiana Firemen's convention will be held here June 21. Hundreds of firemeu and visitors < will bo here on that day and it is a ■ splendid opportunity to show our 1 guests what a fine Httlo city we have. t The local firemen waut to pvit on a t parade during the day and are ask- « sng that Decatur people join in, dec- • orating their automobiles or furnish c r lug a float for the event. -■ ; - t Eighteen individuals and organiza ■ tlons have volunteered to furnish a I room in the beautiful Adams County Memorial Hospital, which will be dedicated on or about July 4th. The gift of the furnishings for a bed room is one of the finest that can be made and those who make it are performing a noble and public-spirited deed. Don't litter the streets with paper, grass, brush and sweepings from your office or place of business. Gather the sweepings and take it to the alley and burn it. Help keep the' streets clean ami add to the cleanliness of your city. o -.7. • -:"’Z! t: '.v. 1 :: w. 2 Court House j A number of cases were set down for trial today during the September term of court. The case of the state vs. Frank Straub, who is charged wilh assault and battery with intent to kill, in connection with the shoot ing of Morris Swathwood here recently. was sit for trial on September 7. However, it is generally believed that the case will not be tried, since Swathwood ami George Godfrey, the other prosecuting witness in the ease, have disappeared and no trace of them has been found. The two eases against Amos D. Buck master, former cashier of the Linn Grove Bank, were set for trial on September 17. Buckmaster is charged with overdrawing a bunk account, larceny and embezzlement in indictments returned by the Adams county grand jury last December. The following cases have been set for trial during the September term which opens on September 3: September 4 —State vs. Ivan Smith state vs. Jacob Weidemanu. and state vs. Samuel J. Renner.
