Company, 122 Michigan Avenue, Chicago Fifth Avenue Bldg., New York City N. Y. Life Building, Kansas City, Mo. The French army is ready for the, invasion of German territory andj there are indications of a warm old I time on the battle front. America has a thousand men and a few officers there and unless they move soon we may be mixed up in another unpleasant affair. A bootlegger’s association lias been discovered in Chicago which furnishes lawyers influence and bail when a fellow gets caught up. Some day the inside story of how booze is j handled will make an interesting story except for those caught in the I net. Will Hays lias discovered that his white washing of Fatty Arbuckle and | his mushy Christmas eve announce | meiit have not struck a popular chore I ift this country. Now he says it's up I to the people and that they don't have! to stand for Fatty if they don't want I to. Even good poliicians stub their’ toes some times. The Copper and Brass Research estimates that eight billion dollars worth of building will be done this year if we don't run out of labor, material and money. If every one pulls together wc won't run out of any thing and such a year would da much I towards getting our wonderfur country back on a sane, safe and sound basis. —— The carpenter’s strike has been settled and the scale adjusted for the year. Contractors will co-operate with the people of the community to make this the banner building year in Decatur's history. The outlook is good and with every thing cleared this early there is no reason why we should not go right ahead with plans for the erection of many homes and business houses and public buildings. Frank Seger, booze runner, arrested and convicted for selling liquor which was transferred to Bluffton from Illis county, escaped from the Bluffton jail Saturday evening, crawling through a one foot hole. He left a note behind which indicated that lie bad not been given a square deal by officials there but Sheriff Frauhiger says he can't imagine what lie means. Neither can we. A Bluffton woman suing for a divorce alleges that her husband has been drunk for a year. That's some spree and might indicate that Wells county officials could keep pretty busy at home. Where did he get it? Glancing at the police records of Bluffton we are led to believe there is a source over there aud that all the booze used in Wells county didn’t come from Adams By the way what has become of the police force? Is the fine old gentleman who used to drop in every few weeks and threaten to arrest
auto owners and drivers still drawing ids salary? For some months there were indications that he would become a pest but he hasn’t been seen around here for half a year. Perhaps they are easing up until the legislature quits so the law makers t won't Ul_ I 1 DtKlN GSP IH S I ' —l*

change things and make them go to work. ’ i w xw ’ Renew your subscription to the ) Daily Democrat this month and se[l cure a handsome premium. Hundreds > have done so the first nine days of Ji the mouth and it is hoped that the I ’ renewal campaign will be a one hun- ' I dred per jjent success. We have to depend on you folks right here at home to keep our list up and we in return want to do every thing we can to please you. Now Is the time to ' show your loyalty by giving your support. — Surely the legislature will not alI low Ihe request for three to five mil- ’ lion dollars to build the finest prison jin the world at Pendleton. The prison us planned will cost that and the outrage of it is that at this time when every one knows that expenses are too high it is being built on the cost plus plan and that more than two hundred thousand dollars is being I paid for supervision. The allowance of such a thing will eradicate any I honesty of purpose in economy as | recommended in the governor's mes- ’ sage. , The democrats In tho legislature are for retaining the state tax board. I with limited powers and a home-rule I feature. Now, they're getting back to ■ common sense. Under present cor.i ditions a lot of wise men at IndianapI olis have despotically ruled the people in the rural districts, when it I came to tax matters. If the corporate j taxing bodies throughout the state had ■ been one-half as extravagant in their expenditures of money locally as the state administration has been through its various commissions, then there would be some reason for curtailing the home rule idea.—Hartford CityNews. The Goshen News-Times, one of the leading republican dailies of northern Indiana has this to say concerning the early quarrel among the G. O. P. representatives: "With a full membership present the republicans have a majority of four in the lower house of the Ind'ana general assembly. Illness of two republican members has reduced this majority to two and a row between rival aspirants for important committee assignments and other patronage swag threatens to throw at least temporary control of the house of representatives Into the hands of the democrats. This would not be such a terrible calamity should it result in a lesson to these embryonic statesmen that they are chosen to represent the people instead of logrolling for the advancements of their personal ambitions or for the benefit of special Interests. The average citizen does not care who heads this or that committee to long as he possesses ordinary qualifications as an executive and if the republicans lose control of the legislature it would be serving the political egotists right. o Invents Horn Which Will Make More Noise, He Says Bloominton. Ind., Jan. 8. —Dr. A. U Foley has invented a horn, which he says will liberate the sound much easier than those in ordinary use now. Dr. Foley said the horns of today retain most of the sound in the small ends. redpepperfor COLDS IN CHEST Ease your tight, aching chest. Stop the pain. Break up the congestion.
