IS. Purdue's basketball hopes have not been v high since the recent operation on the yap-1 tain and star forward “Able" Maa-1 ters. It is doubtful whether le will be in condition soon enough to start the season. Besides Msste.s. Eversan. S >ll,van ■ and Holwerds remain from last year's ( championship team. Miller graduated , and his place at back guard will be hard for “Piggy" to fill for all the soph- 1 (.mores are much shorter than the re- 1 no.vned "Candy" and besides, most of them are forwards. Lambert will have a team of little men this year, but they will be one of, the fastest, quickest, and most accu- - rate team to be seen anywhere. It would not surprise the Boilermakers' to land the chief position again this year, but they are not over-confident. No practices will be eld until January, or at least until after Xmas, in order to give Holwerda and Eversman who played football, a chance to rest. .This late start will handicap “Piggy" and the Old Gold and Blue will get a poor start in the conference. U. S. Sailors Stage Two Months’ Party Rio de Janerio—The visit of the United States Steamship Nevada to Rio will go down in the annals of the' American colony an the gayest and ' most successful two months party ’ever held on the shores of Guanabra bay. The big warship arrived on Septemi her 5 and departed November 16. The ' time in Rio was one continuous party, —with the gobs and marine detachment occupying the center of the stage al’ the time. And the navy showed its appreciation by coming through handsomely every time it had a chance. ‘ Nevada Day" at the International Exposition, arranged by the Commissioner General of the United States, drew the biggest crowd ol paid adi misions of any one day since the show I opened. Incidentally it provided Brazil an ■ opportunity to see real North Amerii can football, played on a field built by American engineers, who are tearing down the Morro do Castello. •Nevada" boxers also caused the manly art to increase tremendously in popularity in Brazin-where all the local sports have been talking boxing since the Carpentier-Dempsey battle. I And finally, after raising several thousand milreis for the Rio graded school, which is operated by the An-glo-American Colony, through a vaudeville show in one of the suburban theaters, the gobs and marines topped things off by giving the school SI,OOO right out of their pockets. s_s_s—WANT ADS EARN—s—s■—s $— WANT ADS EARN—->—s—s
