She went to sleep again and thought no more of it until it was definitely established the automobile had been abandoned. When farmers discovered the hatchet murder and little Billy cuddling up to the corpse of Mrs. Shaffer, in her bed trying to keep warm, Mrs. Laird told her story to authorities again and new significance was attached to it. Sheriff Yost was still questioning Ben Brookshire, farm hand, discharged by Shaffer shortly before the Shaffers were last seen eight days ago. He was convinced that Brookshire did not wield the hatchet which split the skulls of the victims, but thought perhaps the youth might throw some light on the crime.
