Lagonarsino, 25, is the first licensed women auctioneer in greater New j York. “Why shouldn’t I sell merchandise, at auction?” Miss Lagonarsino ask-[ ed. "1 am employed by Charles Rose, who has a large auction business and I have often wished that 1 could help, when he had other engagements. It, finally occured to me that there was no reason why I shouldn't be an auctioneer.” Joseph P. Day, the noted real estate auctioneer, when he heard there was to be an incursion of women into the auctioneering field was enthusiastic in praise of the idea. “Women,” he said, “are better, qualified than men in many branches' of auctioneering. Mean Thief Steals Hens From Poor Lady A mean thief has stolen three hens from the small flock of chickens be[longing to Mrs. John Rice, who resides ion Short Sixth street. Mrs. Rice de- [ pends upon the money derived from tlie sale of the eggs from her chickens to buy her groceries and the loss of three hens will be felt very much. One of the hens, it is said, was taken during the day time. o Farmer Stages Gun Battle With Thieves William Mockey, farmer living two miles east of Ossian, staged a running gun battle with thieves who attempted a robbery of his flock of turkeys shortly after eleven o’clock Sunday night. Mockey apprehended the men in act of taking the fowls from their roosts in trees, at the rear of his house. He procured a shot gun from the house and returned, found the men making their getaway across a field and into a small woods. One of them turned and fired at him with a revolver, the bullet passing within a few feet of Mockey, close enough that he could hear it sing as it went by. Mockey returned fire with the shot gun. a repeater, and tired thre shots after the retreating thieves. The third shot was fired as the men left the woods in making to the roadway. He had sent word to the officers in Bluffton in the meantime, and they rushed to Mockeys farm. By the time they had arrived there, however, the thieves had had ample time to make r, get-away. f SPORT TABS Los Angeles—Jimmy Murphy won the 250 mile automobile race here. Chicago Bears handed them u 22 to 0 beating here yesterday. 0 PATRIOTISM DAY BEING OBSERVED Third Day Os American Education Week Being Carried Out Today Today is Patriotism Day in American Education Week throughout the nation. The points emphasized in connection witli patriotism today are: the bag —the emblem of freedom; music as a nation builder; universal use of the English language in the United States; and the citizen’s duty to vote. The slogan for today is "Visit the schools today; patriotism is the basis of a happy nation.” The movement for a nationwide observance of American Education V,'tek was initiated by the American Legion with the cooperation of the Na'lonal Education Association and the United States Bureau of Education. The purpose of the week’s observance is to encourage development of more intellectual citizenship, n stronger and healthier people by encouraging physical education, playgrounds and better hygienic conditions, and the encouragement of public education because it is of primary importance to I lie future welfare of the nation. All teachers in Adams county are required to hold or participate in soma public meeting within American Education Week and report on the success of the meeting, the numbers in attendance, and the results expected from the meetings.
