Cancer begins as a small local growth which can often be entirely removed by competent surgical treatment or in certain external forms by using radium, X-ray, or other methods. 4. Cancer is not a constitutional or ’’Blood” disease. There should be no thought of disgrace or of hereditary taint about it. 5. Cancer is not a communicable I disease. It is not possible to "catch” I cancer from one who has it. I 6. Cancer is not inherited. It is I not even certain that a tendency to the disease is inherited. 7. The beginning of cancer is usually painless; for this reason —it is frequently overlooked and neglected. 8. Every persistent lump anywhere ■ about the body is a warning sign calling for competent medical advice at once. Not all such lumps are cancers ■ but they may turn into cancers if neglected. ■ 9. Any sore that does not heal, pari ticularly about the mouth, lips or ton - gue is a danger signal. Picking and ' irritating such sores, cracks, ulcerations, etc, or treating these skin conL ditions by home remedies, pastes, i poultives, caustics, etc. is playing with fire. Warty growths, moles, or other birth marks, especially those subject to irritation, should be attend- : ed to immediately if they change in color or appearance or start to grow. ; Avoidance of chronic irritation and removal of just such seemingly in ■ significant danger spots may prevent ■ cancer. 10. Persistent indigestion in middle life with loss of weight and change oi color, or with pain, vomiting, call for ’ thorough and competent medical advice as to the possibility of internal ' cancer. 11. Radium, in the hands of a few ■ skillful surgeons and hospitals pos 1 sessing enough of this rare and very expensive substance, is a useful and promising means of treatment for some kind of cancer, but it must not be thought of as a cure for every form of cancer. 12. No medicine will cure cancer. Doctors and institutes which advertise cujes without the knife play upon the patient's fear of operation in away that too often leads to fatal delay in , seeking competent treatment. Go Srst to your family physician! 13 Cancer is not a hopeless disease.' Statistics recently compiled show that since 1916 the increase in . mortality from cancer has been checki ed. Open warfare by open discussion will prevent any needless deaths from ■ cancer. Let us all pull together in a campaign for public education to the end i that the motality rate from cancer may be reduced 30 per cent in the . next ten years, which will mean an annual saving of 30,000 persons who would be otherwise succumb to this disease. 14. If this cause appeals to you, you can help by joining the league. Annual dues are $5.00 payable to How ard Bayne, Treasurer, Columbia Trust Company, New York.
