OUR TAXES:— Local taxing units including the county, city, school and library board and the townships have dopted budgets and fixed the tax levies and rates for 1923. In a few cases the tax rate per hundred dollars is higher, but this does not mean that local taxes will be increased for the taxpayer, as in many instances the lower valuations mean lower taxes, even in view of the slightly increased rates. The net valuation of taxable property last year was iifty-one million dollars as compared to forty-two million dollars, the valuation upon which next year’s rates are based. Several of the townships were forced to increase the rate on account of the decreased values, but not many of these taxing divisions w-ill raise more money in 1923.

In the city of Decatur the rate will be the same as this year, which means a considerable saving to the taxpayers, figuring on the lower valuation. In the county the road repair . rate will yield only $105,000.00 in 1923 ■ as compared to $117,000.00 this year and although the county general fund Including bridge improvements uml repairs, bonds and interest payment and regular county expenses will J yield more money next year, the inI c rease will more than be spent for the t building of new bridges. The budget > of the general expenses for 1923 is I I several thousand dollars lower but 1 the increase in the bridge fund boosts the rate over the 1922 figure. Bridges must be built and next year at least fifty thousand dollars will be paid out for new bridges, the Lewton bridge north of Decatur being the largest project and tho estimated expenditure for this structure is thirty thou sand dollars. Although the rate of the Decatur school board will be four cents high er. less money will be expended in 1923, which outlays includes the paying of teacher's salaries and the paying of the bonds and interest for the new high school, and the building of ' the new gymnasium and auditorium A community must have good schools and tho only way to get them and then maintain them is to pay for them. Summed up the different taxing units of the county are being about as economically administered as impossible and at the same time progress and maintain those improvements including schools, public institutions, county hospital and the highways we already have. Then if "Yeomandale," the- City of Childhood, is established in Decatur i we certainly ought to have the new . federal building and postofflee If . there is any way to get it. Press re- 1 . ports state’ that congress is figuring on passing the omnibus building bill I through which the funds would be! provided for the building of new post- j I office buildings. The federal govern-1 ment before the war purchased the Niblick lot in this city on Liberty Way, opposite the court house as a site for a postoffice building and if other towns are going to get federal plums we believe Decatur should be given a little consideration. Let's . have our congressman see what can . be done. Our commerce department says this country sent about four hundred! thousand tons of coal to Europe in July, while the strike was staring the country in the face. A little | later Americans were paying big I prices to bring coal from Europe.
