HOOSIER STATE ROADS REPORTED TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION FOR RACE GOERS Indianapolis, May 26, (Special to Daily Democrat)—When great caravans of gasoline chariots begin moving across Indiana next week with Indianapolis and the Motor Speedway their objective because of the Internationally known automotive derby May 30, Hoosier state roads will be in splendid condition to meet this tremendously augmented traffic, John D. Williams, director of the state highway commission, said today. For several weeks the entire forces of the maintenance division of the state highway department have worked continuously to put state roads in condition to expidite this traUii and, according to A. H. Hinkle, chief maintenance engineer, all state highways are in fair condition and many miles are as excellent as speed courses. In anticipaton of the thousands who annually respond to the thrill of the great classic and motor to the Hoosier oval, Indiana state highway officials have compiled information on the best roads to be taken by out-state motorists coming to Indianapolis. They point out that state roads are easy to follow because they carry the number on telephone poles alongside, and that numbers can not easily be be mistaken as they are within an outline drawing of the state stenciled in white on black background. As an added precaution and to insure the maximum of safety to those unfamiliar with the highways, culverts, headwalls, mail box posts and such telephone poles and other obstructions close into the traveled ways have been freshly whitewashed. These markings also will greatly assist motorists in night driving. According to Mr. Williams a list of the selected routes will be sent to the state highway commissions of Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin, and to automobile associations, motor clubs and chambers of commerce at Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, Chicago, Louisville, Evansville, South Bend and Terre Haute. The Hoosier Motor Club is cooperating in marking turns, dangerous crossings and the like. Routes crossing the state and leading to Indianapolis as selected by the highway officials are: Traffic coming from Toledo, Ohio, should come via Fort Wayne, following State road 11 through Huntington,, Marion, Anderson to Greenfield where it will meet the National road leading west into Indianapolis. One short detour just north of Marion is in fair condition. Traffic coming from Columbus, Ohio, should follow National road through Richmond, Cambridge City, Bublln, Greenfield to Indianapolis.
