New York Stock Exchange New York, Feb. 10—The list In general on the New York stock exchange today opened higher. Steel common was an exception which perhaps was only natural in view of the violence of the advance just before the close Thursday. At 89 tills stock was off %. Baldwin made an early high at 10t which duplicated the high on tins move made a few days aco Industrial Alcohol was strong getting above 45. Among the lower priced issues, cast iron pipe line was the leader, opening at 26%, up 1% and representing an advance of about 8 points in the last few days. Studebaker opened at 94%. up %. The St. Paul issues were still the leaders among the rails in activity and strength. There was also an excellent demand 'for the dividend paying carriers w’ith Union Pacific opening up % at 129% New Haven was within % of the recent high. Steel common sold down to 88%, off 1 net. What attracted attention to a three point move in this stock Thursday was the small amount of stock that changed hands. Transactions for the full session were less than 33,000 shares. Five years or more ago a three point advance in steel in a normal market would involve transactions of more than 100,700 shares. At that time, however, Wall street held close to three million shafes whereas today Wall street holds about one million shares. Steel common closed last night 5% above the price at which employes ire permitted to subscribe this year It is known that a big short interest ixisits in all steel shares and this may have had something to do with he sharp advances recorded in the ast hour. The general list accomplished little n early trading although specialties were run up. Cast iron pipe common nade a new high on the move at 27%. up 2% net. Liberty Bond Market U. S.
