The newest plan is for the government to buy the 35,000,000 gallons of liquor now stored In the warehouses at about 31.25 per gallon and resell it for medicinal purposes at 312 00 per gallon. Why has the government any more right to profiteer and handle whiskey than any one else? Have you renewed your subscription to the Daily Democrat for the year 1922 We are making an effort to make the big record in our nineteen years in the daily field this month and the first week did so. If we can keep up the average for the month we will exceed previous years. Help us do it. ■ Whatever the results in thn senate over the Newberry case the facts remain that the Michigan senator spent a fortune or that his committee spent it for him and that as a result he was elected by about 10,000 votes. If he retains his seat by a vote of his colleagues he should resign for by-his own admissions, he has violated both state and national laws. The cemetery at Warsaw has be-
come such a popular place for young I people in the evening that the council has found it necessary to adopt an ordinance providing for big iron gates to be locked each night. The spooners will probably find another lot if they are so inclined and the • town may need a fence factory to j keep up with them. ■ Let’s be thankful for any good that : comes from the disarmament convention. If we save the money spent in : building huge and useless battleships, that's something even if we 1 spend it in some other manner. We 1 believe that an agreement entered in-, to by all the powers of the world would be better than a treaty of five 1 nations but this is no doubt better! than nothing. However you will find a lot of people and some of them right in the senate who will ably denounce the treaty and refuse to lend; • any aid in ratifying it. The worst is yet to come.

Adam* county ciUteus wiu pay more than a million dollars in taxes this year, a large amount. Os this the sum of 3122.965 goes to the state, a* much as was raised all together not so very long ago. The rest of the money Is for roads, schools, bridges, road repair, county, town and city and township government High taxes in real money has come since the new tax law went into effect. There may be other causes but that fact stands out clear and plain. We are snappy in this country and we are only interested in new things. | A few weeks ago when Fatty Arbuckle was tried for manslaughter the court room was crowded and millions awaited with interest the accounts of progress. The same Fatty is on trial again but no one seems to care anything about it and
even the sightseeers are passing up thei eVnsational trial. They have i 1 heard it once and that’s enough Bring on something up to date. The terrible accident in VanWert ’ county yesterday when the lives ot several children were taken and other j happy boys and girls frightfully injur- | ed has cast a gloom over that county. , An investigation is now being made by the authorities to fix the blame for . ! the affair but this will not serve to heal the sad hearts of the parents. In this case the driver and one of the bfys got out and walked up to the track to look for a train but the fog hid the oncoming freight from view and for some reason the rumbling could not be heard. Later details may give facts not yet made public but the one thought is that in this day when travel is largely in autos, every driver should be sure before he attempts to cross a railroad track. At the annual meeting of the stockholders and directors of the First National Bank of this city yesterday. Charles A. Dugan became president and Theodore Graliker was promoted
to cashier. Mr. Dugan has been con netted with this splendid financial institution for many years and under his careful management it has grown to be one of the strongest banks in this section of the state. The new honor is a deserving one and he will ably continue to serve his stockholders and the public. Mr. Graliker is a popular and efficient young man who has likewise earned his “spurs” and who will assume the duties of his new place with a complete knowledge of that important office and every qualification to continue the high standard fixed by his predecessor. Mr. Smith who retires as president, has served many years and his friends here are legion. Though not active in the bank he has given considerable time to his interests here and always to the betterment of this community. Mrs. J. H. Stewart is confined to ner bed today, suffering from an ati tack of the grip and tonsilitis..

Lafayette, Ind., Jan. 11.—Invention of the electric machine to make ozone a gas highly important in industry, especially in chemical plants, and for ventilating purposes by K. B. MeEachron of the Purdue university Engineering Experiment station Staff, was announced today. The machine improves the old method of making ozone, will increase considerably the amount of this gas over that produced by any other process now being used according to the university announcement Patents have been applied for by the Purdue Engineering Experiment Station. The machine is an aluminum tube 6 feet long and six inches in diameter with a series of small glass tubes inside. Air is forced through the aluminum tube which is operated at 50,000 volts. The electric discharge formed in the tube passing through the air breaks up the oxygen molecules into atoms, the smallest body known to science. These atoms recombine to form ozone. KEEP URIC ACID OUT OF JOINTS . Tells Rheumatism Sufferers to Eat Less Meat -and Take I Salts. Rheumatism is easier to avoid than to euro, states a well known authority We are advised to dress warmly; keep the feet dry; avoid exposure; eat less meat, but drink plenty of good water. Rheumatism is a direct result of eating too much meat and other rich foods that produce uric acid which is absorbed into the blood. It is the function of the kidneys to filter this acid from the blood and cast it out in the urine; the pores of the skin are also a means of freeing the blood of this impurity. In damp and chillly cold weather the skin pores are closed thus forcing the kidneys to do double work, they become weak and sluggish and fail to eliminate the uric acid which keeps accumulating the circulating through the system, eventually settling in the joints and muscles causing stiffness, soreness and pain called rheumatism. At the first twinge of rheumatism get from any pharmacy about four ounces of Jad Salts; put a tablespoonful in a glass of water and drink before breakfast each morning for a week. This is said to eliminate uric acid by stimulating the kidneys to normal action thus ridding the blood of these impurities. Jt-d Salts is Inexpensive, harmless and is made from the acid of grapes and lemon juice, combined with iithia and is used with excellent results by thousands of folks who are subject to rheumatism. • i DECATUR-MONROE GAME TONIGHT The Monroe high school boys and girls varsity and the eighth grade basketball teams, accompanied by a large delegation of rooters w’ill visit this city tonight and will clash with the local high school boys and girls varsity teams and the Central eighth graders at the Athltic hall in what is considered as the greatest basketball program of the year.
