IS HELD AT BAY Packington Under Watchful Eye of Regument of Mounted Armed Police. Chicago, Dec. 9.—(Special to Daily Democrat). —Pack lugton was held at bay today by a regiment of mounted police armed with shot guns and a federal injunction. Guards were ready to bring machine guns and tear gas Into play against striking employes of the packers. “Cossacks, Damn the Cossacks" was shouted from second and third story windows as the mounted police and motorcycle guards passed houses of strlckers "hack o’ the yards.’’ Occasionally the stray shot of a sniper from a roof top swished throu the air. Other than these slight disturbances Packingtown was quiet on the fourth day of the strike of unionized employes against a ten percent, reduction in pay. Chicago, Dec. 9.—((Special to Daily Democrat). —Packers boosted the wholesale price of meat today as the strike of their unionized employes went into the fuurth day. Packers quoted pork at from 22 to 30 cents a pound, an increase of from 17 cents since the strike was called. Other meats have advanced but not so much. ■ ■ • ♦++++♦+♦♦♦♦+♦♦♦+ ♦ ANOTHER CENTER ♦ ♦ Indianapolis, Ind., Dec. 9 — + + The center of the telephone ♦ + system of the United States has + ♦ been located in Indiana near the ♦ + center of population as found by ♦ ♦ the census bureau, according to ♦ ♦ Frank Wampler, general man- ♦ + ager of the Indiana Bell Tele- ♦ ♦ phone company. + + If a meridian were drawn ♦ + through the telephone center, ♦ + there would be as many tele- ♦ ♦ phones west of the line east of ♦ + it and if a parallel of latitude + ♦ were drawn through its center, ♦ ♦ there would be as many tele- ♦ ♦ phones north of it as south of it. + +++*+++♦♦*++++++
