1 ago Sir Wilfred Laurier, Liberal leader was defeated decisively because of his advocacy of the reciprocity treaty with the United States, the Conservatives carrying parliament on that issue by a tremendous majority. Now the Liberals win on a platform declaring for tariff for revenue only, preferential treatment for goods coming from British countries and reciprocity with the United States. The i people of Canada evidently realise that the war has made a difference, and that it is now necessary to develop trade as rapidly as possible, to keep taxes down, and that it is most unwise to Interpose artificial barriers
to trade. The election is a defeat for the high protective policy and a triumph for I freer trade. Perhaps there is no great difference between Canadians and Americans in their thought on this subject. They are facing much the same conditions and their necessities are much the same. It might be well for our statesmen to look into this matter, and especially would it be wise for them to reflect that never before have there been so many influences that seem to forbid extreme tariff legislation. The upset in Canada may perhaps serve as a lesson. — Indianapolis News. Jesse Eschbach of the state board of accounts, warns officials of the various counties in Indiana to slow up on “unjust expenditures of public funds.” The school board at Lafayette employed a nurse for the schools and when unable to find a-.law author-

izing this, charged up the services to an assistant attendance officer. He insists that the burdens are increased by “fads not based on actual necessity" and while we don't know the facts about school conditions at Lafayyete, we recognize the fact there is some truth in what he says and the same thing can be applied to state and national officials. Secretary Mellon is opposed to the bonus bill, favors a prompt reduction of the surtaxes on large incomes, reduction of corporation taxes and other things which favor the rich at the expense of the ordinary man and the youngster who gave two years of his life that this country might continue and such men as Mellon make millions, thrive and gain power. This normalcy stuff may be great for the hundred million dollar man. but those members of congress who vote with them will discover next November what the people think of their wisdom.
It's a cold old day when Muncie is I not out in front with a sensation. Just I now they are the headliners in Judge I Anderson’s court at Indianapolis, forty I one citizens being charged with violation of the liquor laws. ~ Along with I the “runners”, several officers are I included and the twenty-one men who j plead guilty admit they were guaran- I teed protection at so much per week. I It’s a rotten mess and credit for clean- I ing it up goes not to enforcement offi- I cers, but to District Attorney Van- I Nuys and his assistants. 1 While others may complain about I business, the Decatur city plant | shows an increase for the month of I November and while you're thinking I that over, please also consider the I fact that though 50,000 kilowatts more I were used last month than the same I month of a year ago, the cost of production was considerably less. The plant is operating at a satisfactory profit and those in charge have a right ot feel good about it, as should the taxpayers. | The report of the state board of accounts. gives every Adams county Official, a perfect record and a clean slate, a fact worthy your consideration and approval. "Not even slight errors were found aid affairs in this county are 100 percent, fine, which is going some. The treasurers of thf various school boards of the county also made this same record and all of these officers have been commended for faithful and excellent services. An important meeting will be held at the Decatur Industrial rooms this evening and it is hoped the attendance will be large. Hon. Albert Stump of Indianapolis is sent here through the state utilities association and while there are several church and lodge meetings on, we hope as many ias can will arrange to hear the address. The state republican committee and the leaders of the party are backing Senator New for renomination almost to a man . Now whit if Hurry should Islip a "cog . and 5 Bevemdge land? Wouldn’t it be just a little embarrasing? Os course they might follow the European custom and resign as the cabinets do. Yon are urged to hear Hon. Albert Stump at the Industrial rooms this
evening. The meeting will be at 8 o'clock and those who cannot be there nt that time are invited to come later. Hlh message, we are sure, will Interest everyone and you are cordially invited to hear him. ■ , e—— AT JOINT MEETING Indianapolis, Dec. 7 —George N. Mannfield, chief of the fish and game division of the state conservation department, will address a Joint meeting of the Greensburg Rotary club and the Decatur County Fish and Game Protective Association at a banquet to be held at Greensburg on the evening of December 12. On the same evening the seven reel educational motion picture showing the activities of the state warden service and the propagation of bass at the state hatchery in Riverside Park, Indianapolis, will be exhibited at the K. of P. theater under the auspices of the local sportmen's club.
