MANY QUAIL IN STATE OF INDIANA State Conservation Department Says There Are More Birds Now Than IN PAST TWENTY YEARS’ Closed Season for Bass and Blue Gills Has Done Wonders for Species Indianapolis, July 7. —With the lust two winters favorable because the) were open, supplemented by warder service protection, there are now more quail in Indiana than at an) time in the past twenty years. George N. Mannfleld, chief of the division ol fish and game, state conservation department, will tell 40,000 members ol 120 protective clubs in his monthly letter which roes forth tomorrow. “Rased on reliable information re reived from many sources we are pleased to say that the closed season on the black basses and blue gills this spring did wonders towaid perpetua tion of these species of fish in Indiana waters," the letter says. Reports have reached the department telling of the prevailance of young bass and blue gills in lakes and streams. “It was a particularly favorable spawning sea son," says Mr. Mannteld “especial!) for fishes inhabiting creeks and rivers There was compartively little rain fall and the waters were in propel condition for the parent fish to spawn guard their eggs, and bring off theh young. The law was well observed." Mr. Mannfeld answers the charge of a few dissatisfied and misguided ■ persons that the new law was respon slide for the death of some flshe: i caught on a hook and east back, with < the statement that practically all ol i the 400 parent fish in Riverside park J state hatchery are hook and line bass ' He cites facts to show that exceed ingly few fish cauglit with a hook dit I if properly handled and brands falsi ; the change this law is not good be cause fish thus caught and returned to the water die by hundreds. Thi: , argument, he says, is advanced b? 1 persons who wish no closed season a < spawning time and desire to repeal J the law at the next legislature. Witl 1 the exception of two. each tit the 12t organization protective clubs of the state favor the close season law, lit says. What the closed season has don< i for the black basses and blue glib , may well be done for other desirable species for to increase the supply wc must see that they reproduce natural , ly and unmolested. The principal i: ■' right and we would do well to follow it. and make it the basis of real fish protection." i —* l THE TRACTION SCHEDULE t For the benefit of those desiring t< use the traction line, we again pub ! llsh the schedule of the cars whicl became effective July sth: t The cars leave Fort Wayne at 7:00 i 8:00, and 11 o’clock a. m„ and at 1:00 j 3:00, 5:30, 9:00 and 11:05 p. m.
