FOR THE FARMERS tl! 814 1. m——• r Items of Interest to the Farmers of Adams County. The regular meeting of the Union Township Community Organization will be held on Thursday evening, March Hlth, an interesting program has been prepared consisting in part of motion pictures. E. C. Salisbury, county agent of Wells county, will be present and give an address. The St. Mary's Township Farmers' Federation will have a meeting at the Bobo school on next Friday evening, March Uth. A program is being arranged. Piictures will be shown. D. J. Schwartz, president of the Adams County Farmers’ Association will be present. FERTILIZER PAYS ON HOME GARDENS Lafayette, Ind., March 9. —Fertilizer will pay big returns on the small backyard or farm garden the same as it does on general farm crops. This has been shown by extensive experimental work throughout the country. “Manure is the best source of fertility since it will add organic matter as well as plant food to the soil. If none is put on in the fall or winter, it may be applied now and turned under when the ground is plowed or ( spaded. Two or four tons to a lot, 50x 100 feet, is a medium application.” said F. C? Gaylord of the horticultural extension staff of Purdue university. Nitrate of soda is much cheaper this year and it will be well to have a small amount on hand to use on lettuce and other leaf crops in the early spring to hurry their growth. Indiana soils are especially deficient in phosphoric acid. Acid phosophate applied at the rate of 75 to 100 pounds to the average city lot, or two pounds to 100 square feet will be the most beneficial fertilizer to use except manure. The steamed boned meal may be applied at the rate of one pound to 100 square feet. These fertilizers should be spread on the garden just before harrowing or raking. Lime is of particular value in the case of acid soils and heavy clays but should be applied to almost all gardens, 15 to 30 pounds of ground limestone or air-slaked lime to the square rod. Lime furnishes no plant food but sweetens and lightens the soils and by chemical action makes certain foods already in the soils available to the plants. From these recommendations the home gardener may figure out how much fertilizer he should apply. Have it on hand when your gardening starts.

TO POSTMASTERS Will Hays Says Civil Service Will Be Continued in Award of Postmastership (t'nlted Press Service) Washington, March 9.—(Special to Daily Domocratl—Civil service will be retained in the awarding of postmasterships, it was learned today. While no decision ha t been reached as to ijte disposition of the Wilson executive order which aiin.’d to remove postoffices from the patronage list, it stated that the new administration does not intentj to complete revision to the old system. Some change is contemplated, however. The postal establishment is not an institution for profit or politics, Postmaster General Will Hays declared today. "It is an institution for service and it is the president's purposes that humanize the industry. Labor is not commodity. There are 300,000 employes in the postal service," Hays said he would propose that they "be partners in the business." The census of the United States is taken every ten years. City and state census estimates made at intervals during the ten year interim periods are not regarded as official. MR. BROKAW COMES TO THE jFRONT Tells His Friends and Neighbors of His Experience. Every Decatur resident should read what Mr. Brokaw says, and follow his example. He has used Doan's Kidney Pills and speaks from experience. Is there any need to experiment with imitations or untried kidney medicines? Chancey Brokaw, S. Bth St., Decatur, says: “Last winter my kidneys got out of order, caused by a cold settling on them, ify back ached considerably and I had lumbago pains across my back and hips. The action of my kidneys was irregula*. I used Doan’s Kidney 1 Pills from Smith, Yager & Falk’s Drug Store end they soon fixed me’ up in good shape. In a short time my back was well and string." Price 60c, at all dealers. Don-'t simply ask for a kidney remedy—get Doan's Kidney Pills—the same that Mr. Brokaw had. Foster-Milburn Co., Mfrs., Buffalo, N. Y. Marshal Foch Due in Belgrade (Continued from page one) ations from Germany were revealed today by Andrew Bonar Law, government leader in Commons. Bonar Law announced that a bill wiH be introduced shortly providing for the seizure of fifty percent, of the value of German exports. He stated that immediate passage of the bill will be urged since trade with Ger many will be suspended for the time being. Military and naval activity will be expensive, possilrty consuming a short share of the money gained through the customs. From French sources it was learned that even more extensive invasion of Germany is be ing urged in the hope that Germany nt least will agree *to paying something like the great sum demanded by the allies.
