A SHORTER TERM Dr. Hurty Believes Nurses I Can Become Qualified in Two Years’ Course WOULD INCREASE PAY of the Nurses While Learning,—Would be Incentive to Girls to Learn (United Press Service) Indianapolis, Feb. 24. — Student nurses in Indiana are becoming scarcer D‘. .1. N. Hurty. seer.ita’y of the state board ol health, said here today. The principal reason fur this, Dr. Hurty said, is the tact that students are required to attend a local hospital for a terra of three years which is too long a time. Physicians throughout the state are of this opinion, also. ( the secretary added. “1 have heard a number of physicians in the state discuss the ques-l lion and their belief as well as mine is that the course which nurses have to take requires too long a time," Dr. Hurty asserted. “I believe that a nurse can learn as much in two years as they do in three years which they are now required to stuffy. “Dr. John Dill Roberston, health officer of Chicago. 1 believe, has set a very good example in nurse training. During the ‘flu’ epidemic when nurses were hard to get, Dr. Robertson took it upon himself to run a free nurses cshool. He gave these women I who desired to become emergency I nurses a course of six weeks and then he defied anyone to put up a nurse | who could do better than these women at the bedside. Dr. Roberston did i not bar the nurses who had a threei year training.” • , Salaries of student nurses are unsatisfactory and these should be in creased, according to Dr. Hurty. “The salaries of the girls who are now learning to be nurses should be increased," he continued. “These girls I do n<* get enotigh money to take them to the show and buy the necessary garments which they are requirI t d to wear when they are on duty at the hospital, not including street clothes. “I believe that if the term of school were cut and the salaries of the girls increased there would be more girls studving to become nurses.” CARD OF THANKS We desire to thank through the colj umns of this paper the many friends, and neighbors who were so Lind to us (luring the sickness and after the death of our daughter and mother, Mary Elizabeth Davis.
