Friends of Shannon, who is believed to have been killed by a Taxi driver for his Roulette winnings at the Grand Casino, were planning today to tj- k American Minister Long to appear to the Cuban government for a federal investigation. There was a possibility that the murder might also come within the scope of the probe now being conducted by General Crowderr, sent here by the Vnited States at the request of Cuba to look into the polMical. and social situation. , The mutilated body of Shannon, who I was a ticket agent tor the Peninsular and Occidental Steamship company.; was found on the beach near the Grand Casino. It had been partially do-j routed by sharks. The Grand Casino, which is ope: ated under a concession and practically has a monopoly on the particular type of gaining it conducts, is frequented nightly by hundreds of men and women. Rich fittings of the place and the formal attire of the ‘ guests'’ gives it an air of social distinction. The Rot. j lette wheels, of which there are us-| ually four to six in constant play, fur-1 nish the most popular form of gambling. It is estimated that the play i averages $50,000 nightly and on Sgt-1 urday and Sunday evenings two O' j three times that amount. On one occasion the president of a Havana bank is reported to have lost $87,000 at one sitting. One prominent sugar planter is understood to have dropped I $400,000 at the wheel last spring.
