Miller was a visitor over Sunday, having come from National Military home to attend the meeting of the Spanish-American war veterans held here yesterday. 11. L. Confer will go to Indianapolis tomorrow to attend to business affairs. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Stewart left at noon "today for Dayton, Ohio where they will attend the funeral of their friend, Mrs. Armstrong. Ishmael Macy of Elkhart was home lor the week-end, visiting with bis parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Macy. Floyd Keller, David Baker and Raymond Shackley were in Fort Wayne lust evening attending the show at the Palace. A large crowd enjoyed the dance , given by the General Electric Saturday evening at the Masonic hall. The music was furnished by the G. E. orchestra of Fort Wayne. MRS. McCORMICK DEAD Chicago, Jan, 17—'(Special to Daily Democrat) —Mrs. (Harriet B. Hammond McCormick, wife of Cyrus McCormick, chairman of the board of directors of the International Harvester company died today. Mrs. McCormick’s husband was at her bedside when the end came. He had raced to the city from New York, taking a special train part of the way. He arrived about twelve hours before bls wife died. PRESIDENT'S HEALTH GOOD Washington, Jan. 17 —(Special to Daily Democrat) —President Wilson’s condition continues to show such improvement that only an unexpected set-back will cause him to abandon his wish to participate in the inauguration of President-elect Harding, Rear Admiral Grayson, the president’s physician, said today. ■ I SPORT NEWS Berne Wins Overtime Game. Berne, Ind., Jan. 15.—List evening Berne high school won a thrilling ten minute overtime basket ball game from Kirkland township high by the score of 49 to 42. The game was fast and clean throughout and was a thriller for the spectators. The Berne lads played a wonderful floor game and were able to cage the ball at the opportune movemt. Whitehurst and Miller were the stellar players for the local team. Ehrman, the running guard of the Kirkland team, proved to be a several point-getter. In the first preliminary the Berne junior high team defeated the French township team by the score of 24 to 6. The Kirkland high school girls also met defeat to the tune of 24 to 6. The Kirkland high girls also met defeat to the tune of 12 to 6 from th<y Berne high lassies. Coach Huffman is whipping the Berne team into shape for a heavy schedule during the next few days. The game Wednesday evening la the first appearance for the locals and everything Is all set for making the game a success and a real game la assured the local fans. The Legion team will be composed of all well known stars, they being Smith and Grove, forwards; Messell, center; Oliver and Teeple, guards. The Western Gas and Electric outfit are the industrial league champions of Fort Wayne and from their record a real battle will take place Wednesday evening at the gym. Help support the Legion team. Locals Win Overtime Game. The local high school boys varsity basket ball team won a ten-minute /ertime game from the C. C. H. S. live in tills city Saturday night, the final score resulting 22 to 20. The game proved to be a rather slow affair, .th locals lieing unable to get.up their usual speed and had a hard time holding a lead over the visitors. The game was a return contest, the locals defeating the Fort Wayne boys in their city several weeks ago by a small score. The locals started scoring, registering several fielcl baskets and foul goals, before the visitors got started. The visitors then opened up, tied the score and When the first half was over, were leading by a score of 8 to 6. The second half proved a little more Interesting to the fans, both teams running neck and neck, taking turns about forging ahead and when the final whistle blew, the score stood a tie at 18 to 18. Five minutes overtime was then played, neither side being able to score, the point still standing even and another overtime period was decided upon.
