A study of these figures will show you that every citizen, be he rich or poor, laborer, capitalist, fortunate or unfortunate, is hit and hit hard by this most vicious law ever passed in Indiana. If you vote for McCray you, support this law. If you vote for the democratic I ticket you vote your disapproval of it. The serious thing about the new

pl law is the fact that it takes practically all control away from the local governing units, increases the bonjl- >. Ing limits and makes possible taxes r that will absorb your propertty. >. Think of it, the taxes for all genJ oral purposes in this county, not including roads or bridges is but sixteen cents, while we must send twenty cents on each SIOO to Indianapolis. ■ total of more than SIOO,OOO. This year in this county the taxes were reduced 4.2 cents while the state, hungry and wolfish, boosted he levy two cents on the SIOO. Besides this the state takes away com us every penny of the automobile taxes. What do we get in return? It is the most open confiscation o: our property ever attempted and deserves a stern rebuke. Vote the democratic ticket next Tuesday or forever quit complaining bout your taxes. If you build a court house or school >r bridge or road, you have somehing for your money. When you end this money to Indianapolis what o you get in return? These figures hould make you realize even more han you have that the big campaign sue in Indiana should be the tax iw. Remember the $82,000 garage, lemember that the state house wa repaired without a contraqL Re member that money is being spent like water. Remember that our as I fairs are now controlled by a board of three men in Indianapolis, wh< have no idea of our conditions and i affairs. You can stop this right now. Vote the Democratic ticket next I Tuesday. EASY TO VOTE: — The women voters need hate nc fear of not being able to cast thei: ballots on election day. We advise I you to go as early as possible and get it over. If you haven’t been instructed there will be ladies at each voting place to show you how to vote and fold the ballot. You will be given three ballots. One contains the national and state ticket, headed by fifteen electors and followed by the candidates for senator and then the state offices; another is the county ticket, led by the candidates for congress and the third is the township ticket. Each oi course must be folded seperately. ' To vote a straight democratic ticket, place the cross in the circle con tabling the rooster and fold it so the initials are on the outside corner. It is ail very simple and there is absolu'ely nothing to worry about. Sample ballots, county and state, arc at the democratic headquarters where you can be instructed and in mi st of the precincts, the committee women will call upon you. Vote early and be sure to stamp the rooster. After the Berne Witness became the official organ of the republican

party In Adams county, the Goodrich 1' state tax board, acting, under the • 1 now famous Goodrich-McCray tax i law, ordered the auditor of Adams county td issue a remitter to the Herne Witness for the sum of $233.45, thereby reducing its tuxes for the. year 1919 payable in 1920, that amount. The records show the re- . mitter was issued March 26th, 1920. Mr. Rohrer says the Goodrich-McCray i tax law’ is a good one, why wouldn’t 1 he say so? Can you imagine why you are getting the Witness free of charge? There is absolutely no truth, of course, to the impression being given out by those canvassing the city to instruct women voters for the republicans, that a charge of one dollar, is being made by those giving instructions at democratic headquarters. It’s so silly that we can’t underhand how any one would have the nerve to use it or be easy enough to relieve it. Not only is a school beinfi •onducted at headquarters but men ind women are making an effort to reach every voter at their home and ihere will be plenty of people at :ach voting place to show you how to vote as you wish to vote. Unfair tactics rarely make votes. The figures published in today's paper to show you the effect of the new tax law in Adams county are ■lot “guesses” as were recently used n the official republican paper, but genuine. They were taken from the .ax duplicates and you can easily figure yours for next year. After you get it, remember the promises nade that the new law would lessen our taxes and that a republican vote low is a vote in approval of the tax 'aw. A vote for McCulloch and the democrats is a vote against it. Make no mistake. This is out of “our pocket. The Berne Witness admits it was wrong in stating the tax levy to be ninety-two cents in Adams county for next year as compared to twentyeight cents this year. They didn’t miss their guess much. It was 49.2 this year and will be 45 cents next year. Os this but 16 cents' is really the county tax. Out of this all salaries and expenses are paid. Compared to his the state tax of twenty cents certainly looks high, don't it? The republican papers offer as a defense to the admission that Senator Harding owns brewery stock, th. statement that he received it twenty years ago on a debt. Well he didn’t have to keep it all these years did he? Rather thin argument. The hypocrisy of those who now try to aake. Harding appear a dry man if the worst exhibition of its kinds in all history. Senator Harding is promising retrenchment in the cost of conducting the government. An old gag. We remember that Mr. Goodrich prom ised the same thing in this state and the figures published today, taken at random from the tax duplicates for next year, show how he has kept the promise. The republicans do not retrench, they just make you think they do if they can. 7——————— The work done' by Sheriff Melcl i in capturing the insane man, Mor: head, who had escaped from the Toledo asylum, is deeply appreciate! by the people along the eastern cou ty line. As an officer Mr. Melchi hi a record that will stand any invest: gation. He deserves your support. Under the notorious tax law tl valuation for the Indiana Pipe Lin

i - company in Adams county was de- >■ creased $200,000, after the tax had | ; been assessed in the regular way. i Has there been any explanation of < why this was done by the defenders , of the Goodrich-McCray law? i, — Senator Hurry S. New will speak at Decatur next Friday evening. Senator New is another , ■ influential member of the upper house of Congress who, like Watson, is putting Indiana on the map.—Berne Witness. , What map? Now honestly doesn’t it take a lot ■ of nerve to bring Senator New here to talk to the men and women of j Adams county? His record in the senate is about as near a blank as could be found by a systematic hunt. Stamp the rooster. The democratic ballot is second on the ticket this year. Vote against the new tax law and the other instances of mismanagement in state affairs and you vote for your own best Interests. Voters remember the democratic candidates are in the second column on each ticket. Put your cross there and you vote for a reduction in taxes and for the men who will efficiently conduct your affairs. The republican papers and magazines are busy denying rumors and charges that have never been made. It makes people wonder what's the matter. Jefferson township, your increase for state taxes next year will be $1,485.89, a total state tax of $4,332. 50. Under the old law it was only $2,845.61. Which do you prefer?
