WHAT THEY THINK The Federal Reserve Board Believes Extravagance Is On Wane (United Press Service) Chicago, Aug. 25— (Special to Dally Democrat) —Extravagance In the working class is on the wane and a feeling of caution rules all business transactions because it is felt a drop in prices is Inevitable, according to the monthly statement of the federal reserve bank here today. The buying public, the statement said, is checking the extravyge’me which have made “bonanzas" hith- ; erto in industries and trades catering to popular desires and needs, regard less of prices. “Caution rules in business in the seventh division," the statement said. “The producer is cautious for the ! very good reason that mistakes canI not be made in high priced labor and ' raw materials without loss both of prestige and profits. Middlemen are ! cautious because the retailers compel them so to be. And retailers are taking frequent soundings, because they have sensed shoal* in the popu- * iar purchasing power.” ■ The key to the entire situation, it is declared, is “a dearth of liquid I capital and restriction of bank credit.” This restriction resulted in a shifting of burdens and responsihil- ■ ify. Sales dropped and goods piled; up in warehouses. These will be' sold at a loss eventukliy. it was pre dieted. The labor situation has improved, I though there is still some shortage, l ■ the statement declared. The hous- ’ | ing crisis continues acute. Faris, France.—Bathing dresses at j 1 Deuville have ceased to bear any rela-j tion to water. Some of them are made j i of lace, cost S2OO each, and it would! shock the wearer to get them wet.
