Hurty, secretary of the state board of health. About 75 per cent of the 847 consolidated schools in the state are new and were built under the school law of 1911, according to Dr. Hurty. "The public health officer is dis couraged in his work in trying to raise the public health standard,’’ said Dr. Hurty, "when he makes a medical inspection of the school children. The conditions 1 have found in some schools are hornable. A short time ago I visited a school where two children suffering from scarlet fever were allowed to mingle with the others. The vast majority of our small towns and cities have very poor facilities." Dr. Hurty said the child living in these localities is sewed up for the winter, since the belief prevails that the use of water will cause colds. Os course five hundred would not come near to paying the entire cost of the celebration but as It is being given in connection with the Big Northern Indiana Fair, the expense to the Old Home Week committee will be small. Mr. Reppert agreeing to pay every cent of the expense in connection with the celebration. but the committee felt that the minor expenses such as the dec-, orating of the town, the employing of a number of girls to take chargo of the rgeistering, badges, etc., should be met by the Old Home Week committee. Mr. Densely and Mr. Lose stated that they would make a canvass of the business houses on Thursday and would not ask for over five dollars from each business house, except the soft drink parlors, ice cream parlors and restaurants who are expected to give a little more, in view of the extra business that they will enjoy during the week.
