of men remain among the living. The speaker commented upon certain sentences contained in Lincoln's ispeech at Gettysburg, calling attention Ito the fact that emphasis was made upon the "remaining task" and "unfinished work" which the living owed to file dead, and which task applied to the present generation as well as I the generation of that day. . The G. A. K. has done more to keep alive the spirit of patriotism and love for the flag than any other institution in the land. During the dark days of the late war audiences learned <o i .iing every verse of America, and then i too. we learned to stand and uncover I when singing this beloved song. But since the war has ended we find our- ’ -elves losing interest in the song and : we are not singing it so often as be- “ ■ fore. In these trying times of discontent it stands us in hand as a patriI otiv people, to Ife patriots at all times and under all conditions. The true ' American spirit calls for eternal vigilenee. We must teach it, preach it. and above all thing's live it. As a peoI pie today we need more than ever to realize that Eternal Vigilence is the price of liberty, and that as a people j we must stand shoulder-to-shoulder in ’this "unfinished work,” which Lincoln I referred to in his address on November 28, 1863. Immediately after the song, “America" the school children lof the city formed a line of march and lead the women of the Relief Corps, the G. A. R.. the Spanish-Amer-ican veterans and the soldiers of the world war in march to the river bridge where the ladies had charge of I tl;e service of strewing flowers on the waters of the St. Mary’s river in memory of the soldiers who died at sea. Tiie services were interesting throughout, and were probably the most interesting ever held in Decatur. The weather was ideal and there was (not a thing to mar the service in any way.
