v cate an old fashioned democratic victory at the November election. Bainbridge Colby Is now the secretary of state taking his oath of ofllcu r yesterday, in spite of this howling . by the senate committee that they . would oppose his nomination. The rank injustice of the present ! • state tax luw is clearly shown in tills' city. The public library, an institu-I • tion of learning and education and a benefit to society may be forced to close this summer for an extended period on account of a want of funds, the tax board cuttng down the j levy asked last year to such a figure; that the library board will now be forced to borrow money in order to' keep the place from closing down im-| mediately. A law of this kind is a I tetriment to mankind and the soonr it is repealed the better it will be for everyone. Just think of being orced to close a public institution of i earning because the "barons” in In'ianapolis will not allow the people o appropriate their own money for he operation of it. It’s a shame that the library must be closed. Senator Borah has no doubt taken notice to the fate of his colleague. Senator Newberry who was found guilty of corrupting the Michigan election with a wagon load of money and now demands that Major General , Wood or his campaign managers , give an account of the money they are spending and the source from which it is obtained. Borah has remarked that it is apparent that a vast sum of money is being spent in 1 the effort to nominate Wood and that i it has been clearly shown that the ( imople of this country will not longer be dominated by a vote buying election. It is a well known fact that General W<x>d. the favorite candidate for the republican nomination for i president is not a wealthy man and that his salary is less than ten thousand dollars per year and the people are somewhat puzzled as to who is footing the bill. It is apparent that the general will be greatly indebted i to “somebody” if he succeeds in getting the nomination. It would be only just and right if the taxpayers in this city and county could obtain a reassessment of their real estate and in the majority of cases have it lowered. For instance.

( Toludo Ohio in Decatur, under this new tax law the property was assessed at full cash value by the county assessor, which was alright if the state tax board had left it at that figure, but no, they sunt out the order to tack on an increase of thirty per cent which placed a valuation on the dwelling or store building al more than it was worth. This you know is true if you are the owner of real estate in Decatur. The state board has learned from numerous objections filed against the law that many of
the assessments are unjust and in an effort to try to pacify the taxpayer and adjust the wrong they have sent out the notice they will give the proiMTty owner a hearing for a reaseeasnieut but in some way it has leaked out the reassessment may be still higher than the present one, SO it is doubtful if they will receive many petition' for a hearing. The Indianajiolis News has the following, to say on the reassessment plan: | “Owners of real estate who believe 1 that their property is not fairly assessed may seek a reassessment this year. Such applications for a new valuation as of March 1, 1920, must be filed with the state tax board not lator than May 1. The board also gives county taxing officials the right to suggest changes in realty valuations and permits any property owner to demand a reassessment if he believes his property is listed too low. Complaint was made, following last 1 year’s assessment of real estate, that valuations were too high. Where horizontal increases were ordered it meant still higher taxes. Under ordinary circumstances tllie assessment of real estate is made every four years. The state board now makes it possible to correct errors made last spring. Instances have been reported where property sold for less than its assessed valuation. While the way is now provided for correcting assessments. property, owners doubtleas will bear in mind that buildings of I practically every character have ad R vauced in value since last, spring. I This is particularly true of dwellings, | So, while there may have been some I valuations made in 1919 that were | too high, a reassessment may result g in till higher valuations now.’’ X Before, you ask for a reassessment ■ read the last sentence of the above ■ article and then make up your mind ■ that you are going to vote against q this unjust tax law by electing a ■ democratic governor next fall, one I who stands pledged for the repeal of ■ the measure. ■ , . ■ Have you tried those 5 cent Coney Isle Sandwiches I f —at— Fred & Bill’s?
