GETTING READY FOR BIG EVENT Nearly Four Hundred High School Basket Ball Teams Will Take Part IN DISTRICT TOURNEYS Contests to be Held March sth and 6th—Much Interest is Shown (United Frees Service) (By Heze Clark) Indianapolis, Jan. 29.—(Special to Daily Democrat) —There are 439 high schools that are members of the Indiana State High School Athletic association and of this number probably 372 will enter teams in the Ninth Annual basket ball tourney. The district tourneys will be held March 5 and 6. The state has been divided into 26 sections with playing centers selected according to geographical location The winners of the sectional tourneys will meet in the finals March 11. 12. and 13 at Bloomington in the big Indiana University gymnasium. Schools have been assigned to the various sectional centers by counties with the idea of having about the same number in each tourney. The board of the I. H. S. A. A. will select two officials for each tourney and only fair disinterested and competent men will be picked. The schedules will be made by lot after the entries are received. The entries close Feb. 23. In 1903 the Indiana School Athletic association was formed., It was a small organization with only a few r.f the leading high schools included in its membership. Within a few years the association grew in numbers strength and power until today a school that violates the strict rules of tiie association is barred from meeting other schools in the organization and finds it almost impossible to get games. When barred most school make no attempt 40 arrange a schedule. This was not true in the case of Crawfordsville high school this year The Crawfordsville school has a team that the writer believes would win the state high school championship if it could playing the tourney. Dess than twenty years ago just three high schools in the entire state had basket ball teams of any real caliber and ability. These three were Crawfordsville, Shortridge and Manual Training high school, the two latter in Indianapolis. Now the number is almost four hundred. The growth in number of teams and the popularity of the great indoor game is due largely to the fact that the rules of 1. Hj. S. A. A. are so strict. Other states modeled tourneys after the state basket ball tourney idea of the Hoosier state. Illinois a 'I Wisconsin have followed the idea and great tourneys are held in those states but they (H net equal in namber _pf teams contesting the games x ** played in Indiana. Ohio is trying a tourney under the auspices of Cincinnati university this year. Invitations have been sent to the Indiana association from Wisconsin university asking the winners of the Hoosier state championship to meet Hie winners of the Wisconsin title but Indiana authorities have not looked oji the idea with favor. Some high school-authorities are favoring a consolation tourney which would moan that the twenty-six teams winning second in the various sectional tourneys would meet in a 3 day tournament in the gymnasium of one of the big colleges. This would decide many a dispute about the strength of the teams that do not qualify tor the state championship games. To select a po ibie champion in the various district tourneys this far in advance would be almost impossible but it must- be.said that some high schools this year that, have not shown much strength in past sea ons are going strong. While some schools that, were strong iri other years arc again strong this year. Rochester appears to have a good team in the northern part of the stat-. Vincennes Ims always had an edge in its*distri'-t. Franklin's recent one-sided victory over Bhortrldge high school-in Indianapolis caused that, school to appear strong. Shelbyville will probably be Franklin's closest rival in games played at Franklin in March. Martinsville a school that always has a team in the state tourney is again good. The cities where the sectional tourneys will be held and the number of teams that will contest at the various centers follow: Anderson 14: Auburn 14: Bedford Hi: Bloomington 15; Bluffton 15; Clinton 12; Huntington 13: Indianapolis 15; Kendallville I 13; Kokomo 15; Igifayetto 14: Lebanon 13; Logansport 13; Martinsville ! 13; Muncie 16; Newcastle 15: Rochester 14; Rushville 16; South Bond 15; Valparaiso 15; Veedersburgh 14; and Vincennes 15.
