COLLEGE TEAMS. I Are Getting Ready for Opening of the Basket Ball Season —Strong Teams ON DECEMBER 17th Purdue vs. Notre Dame — Indiana Has Promise of | a Good, Fast Five dly Hez dark—Written for United Press) Indianapolis, Ind., Dec. 11 -With the drawing to a close of football season the colleges of Indiana are busy starting basketball. But one college game of football remains to be. played by an Indiana team. Purdue (dosed its football season by losing to Notre Dante. The Boiler Makers will have a chance to get a bit of revenge on Notre Dante on December 17, at Lifayette. when the basketball teams of the two schools meet. In recent years Purdue has had rm edge over Notre Dame in the indoor sport. While Notre Dame is the only col- ' lege basketball team that will play Purdue before the Christmas vacation, the Boiler Makers will get in shape for one of the hardest schedules that a Purdue team ever played, by taking a barn storming trip through Indiana. Twenty players are to make the trip and Purdue will meet independent quintets in many of the leading cities. Purdue cannot expect to win many of these barn storming games for a number of reasons. The independent teams of the state play wonderfully fast basketball. The independent teams include in their lineup some of the best ex-college basketball stars of the country. Then Purdue will be playing many of the games on small Doors which will handicap a conference college team that is accustomed to a largo playing space. Purdue will start its schedule after the holidays by playing Wabash college at Lafayette, January 6. These teams have long been rivals and always have played close in basketball. Purdue’s conference schedule opens when the Boiler Makers meet Illinois January 10th at Urbana. Reports from Greencastle have it that Depauw will have one of the strongest basketball teams in its history this season. Cannon forward. Miller center. Carlisle, and a half dozen others from last years all-star Tiger team, still are in school and Coach Buss’ five should go big. However, it must be remembered that Big Smith is no longer eligible. Smith is a giant back guard who never received the credit due him for his defense play. Depauw had one of the strongest defense teams in Indiana last season and much of that strength was due 1 to Smith’s playing. The big man is sure to be missed at Depauw. Coach "Lefty” Gilbert is starting hie basketball at Rose Poly by a series of class games. At the end of the series the coach plans to select the men for his varsity squad who will form a team that will represent the Engineers this year. Earlham and the Indiana Dental college meet at Richmond Friday night. The Dentals played the Central Normal quintet, last Saturday at the Marion Club gymnasium in Indianapolis. Next week the Dentals will play Wabash college. Last year Earlham defeated the Dental qnintet 35 to 22. The Quakers are strong again this season and expect to repeat on tile Tooth Pullers. Wabash defeated the Dentals 31 to 28 last year. However, the Tooth Pullers may prove a surprise this season for the Dental team is a new one, most of last year’s athletes having graduated. Cofield, the tall Dental center, formerly played on the New Castle high school team. MdCarty, guard, played , with Renssalaer high school and is I famous as a football man as well as a I basketball player. Witter, guard, played with the Tootli Pullers two years I ago, but last season was in the navy. I Havens was on the Indiana University I freshman team last year. He is a for- | ward. Reeves, forward, is a former Edwardsport high school man, who was chosen on the All-Wabash high school mythical qnintet after the tournament in Terre Haute. McPherson is the only regular of last year's Dental five, who is on the squad this season. McVaugh, the former Pendleton I high school man, who is the captain of the Dental five, has been unable to play because of an operation, but may (get into the game before the end of ,the season. "Jumbo” Stiehrn. famous as a footpall coach, will direct the Indiana University basketball quintet. Indiana, Purdue, is planning a barnstorming trip during the holidays. In that I way the men will get the experience ! and return to Bloomington in shape

to play n fast article of basketball during the season just starting I Two years ago Premier Hughes of Australia purchased on his own responsibility llfttcn million dollars’ worth of merchant ships. They aided in the defeat of the submarine campaign, and cleared clogged warehouses of grain in Australia. Their I net earnings to dale have been sutll I (dent to pay off the capital cost.
