This county has been asked for a subscription of $1,200 for the' purpose of preserving Sagamore Hill,' the home of this great American, and citizens of every political faith will join in the movement. The people of this community should support Miss Story, visiting nurse. She is devoting her time, talent and knowledge to the care and inspection of your children. She is constantly looking for signs of impaired vision, for ailments which lurk in the body and which while not entirely decapacitating the child makes study irksome and produces chronic illness and bad health. She is lighting to make the children more capable by giving them better health. It is a great step forward and the best results can be obtained only by the cooperation of parents and the earnest support of everybody in this community. Thb cost is nothing as compared to the good that is sure to come. Already a number of instances are reported which should make every person in Decatur a booster for Miss Story and her splendid work.

' Though the state tax levy should have been announced a month ago, t no information has been received in the various county seats, officially i. stating what this will be. It is said the rate will be slightly less than * twenty cents but cannot be given out until the highway commission and the tax board agrees as to the levy for state road purposes. The law fixes the limit for this at ten cents 3 on the hundred dollars but this was 1 made when the valuation was less j than a third of what it is now. Sev51 ei al members of thie board feel that ) ten cents is too much but the com- > mission insists they ought to have it 1 all. That will raise about fifteen million dollars and will give them a chance to be as reckless and liberal as they could wish. In the mean-| time every county auditor and treas- 1 urer is being delayed and the work is piling up because the board and commission cannot agree. The more we hear about this state control of ! I affairs the more we are opposed to l I | I it. All the explanations that Carl Mote or any one else can make of this law will but add to the intentions of the people to change management and to make sure that the new regime has very different ideas of looking after the interests of the people. I Hill You have been asked to give many times during the past few years and you have responded nobly. “F I I sessed SBOO,OOO and of this amount , Adams county is requested to give i $6,000. The campaign will start next Monday and Chairman Kalver hopes to put it over in a couple of days. . I Get your coat off. We have no doubt that the indictments made by President Gompers against the steel companies are true and they are terrible enough to make one gasp in surprise that such lawless handling of men is permitted in this day of the Lord, 1919. yet certainly there was some other way which would bring correction and cause less suffering to the working men, their families and the rest of j the people of this country, than the great strike. Gary, the head as the I steel trust, refuses to arbitrate while i I the unionists declined to await the Washington conference. Leaders on I each side seem to have set their heads and it looks like a long, hard winter. Not only must the steel i workers suffer but thousands of men 'in other plants, shut, down because of the lack of material are likewise thrown out of employment. It is adI mitted that the only means of lower-: ing the high cost of living is to increase production and the closing of mills, whoever is to blame, is indeed a serious proposition just now. President Will Return At Once. (Continued from page one) sas City to arrive at the capitol Sunday morning at 8 o'clock. The president issued a statement of the facts with regard to the Shant-: ung settlement which he has already stated in several of his speeches. He says he had intended to devote his Wichita speech largely to Shantung, so issued a statement instead. The special train was to leave Wichita at 11 a. m. without the president attempting his speech here. Announcement of the cancellation of remaining 'dates was made before a crowd of 15,000 which jammed the auditorium here. S. A. Amidon, national democratic committeeman from Kansas made the statement. ' The city was crowded for the president’s visit. Crowds massed in all streets adjoining the auditorium, hoping to catch a glimpse of the executive in a parade which had been planned. The parade was postponed. It was announced Wilson had suffered headaches for several days although he had not complained of them except to his immediate asso- ' ciates on the journey. The president has made 40 speeches during the tour since leaving Washington Sept. 3 and has spent all but a half dozen nights on the train. < Remaining dates on the president's schedule were: Wichita and Oklahoma City today, Little Rock, Ark., and Memphis. Tenn Sept. 27; Louisville. Ky., Sept. 28 and 29. He was to arrive in Washington Sept. 30. ( Kick in for more advertising and you won’t have to kick so much about : poor business.
