REGULAR HABITS: — A young man, still bronzed from liis service in the sun and wind, stepped on the scales in front of an East Wash iuglon street store. He waited until the pointer stopped, then said that he had lost nine pounds since ho got out of the army. His companion then tried the scales and found that his loss was twelve pounds. Gradually, those who served in the army and who wrote homo about how much they had gained, are getting j back to their pre-war weights. Many, j soldiers are explaining Urn! their old ) clothing was too tight when they ar- , rived home, but it lits better now. . Some have lost even more titan they , gained.
There is an explanation tor all this. When the men went into the service they had to form regular habits. They were forced to get up at a certain time every morning, to go through certain exercises every day, to bathe regularly, to take long walks and go to bed at a specified hour. If they did not get a certain number of hours’ sleep every night it was not because they were out of bed. The food served in many cases was no more plentiful than they had been having at home, it wiv -good food, well prepared. It bad in it the making of brain and brawn. The regular exercise, good diet and proper living habits made the soldiers gain weight. Now he goes to bed when he gets ready, and eats as much or as little as he desires. He takes little or no exercise and he loses weight. It will happen to any man and it is happening to thousands of former soldiers. The example should stimulate even those who never had any army training to take up some systematic form of exercise, to keep regular hours and to bo more careful about their diet.— Indianapolis News. Tha total valuation for Adams county is about thirty-eight million dollars as compared with eighteen million last year. The danger of this boost in valuation is (hat tlio rate i will climb steadily and we may soon • be paying a five cent tax on the i:i-

s creased valuation. There may be J some way known to the tax experts to make the actual amount of cash ta r be paid next year lower than this but we admit we don't see how it. can t be done under this law. The amount r ot money needed will be greater and the proportionate share upon land and improvements has been largely increased by the new assessment, i Lieut. Governor Bush, who has anI nounced he will oppose the new law 1 in his campaign for the republican ' nomination for governor, should havo , no troublo in linding plenty of effective argument. Farmers of Jay county, willing to pay for their own roads ;uid alter helping to pay for others all over the county, have been denied the right by the state tax board, the efforts evidently being to build brick roads into Indianapolis. A fine law for those who happen to live on the route planned by the directors, who sit in their cushioned chairs at the Several hotel and laugh at the farmers of these outside counties. The state board has just refused to approve the bond issues tor three proposed roads in Jay county. The report of the Indiana United War Work campaign up to April 30th last places Adams county fourteenth in the list of ninety-two counties. We have actually paid in 98.2 per cent of the original quota, a splendid showing and one that will keep old Adams where it belongs, among the leading counties ot the state.
