IN OLE KAINTUCK — ; John IL Kline Writes from * Camp There—lnfluenza Being Checked. i SOLDIERS EXAMINED l i Twice a Day—He’s Under Quarantine for the Measles Though. Mr. and Mrs. J. I. Kline, of northwest of the city have received tie following letter from their soldier son: Camp Taylor, Ky. October 6. 1918 Dear Folks at Home: As this is Sunday again will try, and write you a few lines. This sure a fine sunny south Kentucky | morning, only It's real dusty, we haven't had any rain for two weeks! or better, and you know with nearly 60.000 soldiers tramping around overj the ground all the time is bound tot grind up the earth. Yesterday wei had a regular old western day. the, wind came up about noon and wo! had a complete dust storm just like it used to be when I was out in soutliwestern Nebraska. It lasted un'tl altout dark, then the wind laid, and today there is a- nice cool refreshing wind going. Well, to change the subject, wo boys down here are rather lonesome now they have transferred all of th r boys out of our barracks but the eight corporals and ten cooks. They took them about a mile west of here in the camp for gas drills for 10 days, then they leave for New Jersey. I saw two of the boys last night and they said that they had orders to send all of their clothes and suit cases ' home. There are 30,<100 to leave from here that are billesi for across the pond. We are expecting one hun dred ninety-four new men in here io-
morrow again, then we cooks will have something to do again. Well. 1 guess they are getting the influenza about checked in camp no v. We do not see many going to the hospital. We are examined twice a day 1 had a pretty bad cold last week but am all right now, am pretty sure 1 will get through now. We are quarantined in for the measles until the fourteenth of this month but you know I had them once when I was altout eight er nine years old. How is the weather up there? I suppose it is getting quite chilly. They say it does not get very cold here in the winter time, but at that they give us two good suits of wool underwear and we have three good wool blankts to cover up with. They are large enough so we can fold them and make six thicknesses if necessary. and also got three pair of wool socks a piece. Everything is wool that the government gives the boys. We will get our overcoats about next week, then we will be all fixed up. Well, you know that 1 told you 1 was promoted to first cook the other day and had a good chance for being promoted to mess sergeant. The lieutenant just called me into the Orderly Room and told me that I was mess sergeant now. well, when he got through I nearly forgot to salute him when I went out 1 was so surprised. All 1 need to do mow is figure or keep*books rather but believe me that will be a job. as every thing has to be figured out to the smallest fraction, but you know I always was good in fractions. The reason I got the promotion was that they transferred the old mess sergeant last evening to another battery. 1 must close for this time. Will try and write more the next time. 1 will probably get a chance to come home this winter theil I can tell you easier than 1 can write. Hope that this letter finds you all in good health. Good-bye. Your sou, JOHN R KLINE. 1 Battery A. 2nd Battalion Ist Regiment, F. A. R. D., Camp Taylor. Ky. , NOTICE 1 H. H. Lanuniman has chose the date. Wednesday, Oct. 30th for his farm sale. He will sell live stock. 1 farm machinery, and household goods Watch for bill of sale later. 235 6 LIEUT. PETERSON BETTER A telegram from Mrs. J. S. Peter- , son. who went to Camp Sherman, 0.. ’ yesterday to visit her son. Lieut. Robert Peterson, who has been very sick with Spanish influenza for some C time, was received tills morning by ’.her husband, J. 8. Peterson, saying "Robert still serious but improving, . come Sunday.” Mr. Peterson will ■ leave for the camp tonight.
