WITHOUT FOUN DATION — No Red Tags are Placed on the Barns or Other Places of Storage. • s Indianapolis, Dee. s—The5 —The following official statement from the federal food administration is believed to i suggest the origin of many of tlie false stories that have been circulated in Indiana relative to the confiscation of conserved food, the i?BOurces of which ate promised adequate puni.-h---ment u|m»u their detection by the Indiana State Council of Defense and Dr. Harry £. Barnard, Indiana food administrator. A story that the food administration is seizing potatoes stored on the far ns of the growers in New York state and in New England has gained such cir-j culation in the news papers of that part of the country that the administration caused an investigation of its origin. It was traced from one paper to another, one copying it from another without verification, until its ultimate source was discovered in a freelance reporter who had written ami sold it. his sole basts being a story he had heard in a lodge room. He was interviewed by government officers and promised not to repeat the offense The story, which is entirely without foundation, is that food administrttion representatives tire going about and affixing red labels to the buildings in which the farmers have potatoes stored and leaving orders that the potatoes are government property and are not to be removed without government permission. This action was ascribed to a determination on the part of the food administration to prevent extortionate prices. Careful 11quiry proved that no such tags had been distributed by anybody and no! such orders given. o INSURANCE OF SOLDIERS AND SAILORS Wasbingt >n. I). (’., Dec. 5 The act which provides for government life insurance for soldiers •nd sailors h is now been in operation a little more than a month. From four to six thousand applications are received each day at the treasury department, ''the a mount of insurance applied for sometimes reaching a total of fifty million dollars in a single day. The law provides that soldiers, marines and nurses in active service may obtain from the government life' insurance in amounts not exceeding. SIO,OOO at premium rates ranging from | 65 confs a month at the age of 21 year or $1.20 a month at the age of 51 year, for each SI,OOO of insurance.
