[‘WARNING AC-AINRT ONION LOU”.f I (United Pre*** Service) I Indianapolis, June 11—(Special to Dally Democrat I—Frank K. Wallace. . In a statement today warned gard- - e.Ts against the onion hat e, wbl h : has caused a grreat deal of damage ».n the onion crop In Indiana for sover. i i years: He said: "For several years thi onion crop in parts of Indhii'a has been wetly Injured bv a very .mill yellow Insert known as onion Thrifts or c.nnlon louse. The adult lay tri eggs just beneath the surface of til, leaves and the young rasp the surface of lite lens giving it a silvery appear ance. Drier the leaves curl or twist and dry turning a brown color. “Spraying with nicotine juice solution when damage Is just noticed will I save the crop. (United Press Service) Indianapolis, Ind., June 11—(Special to Daily Democrat) —The latter part -of this week is the best time to plant cucumbers for pickles, according to a ■statement issued by G. L. Christie, state food director today. The in'struction compiled by M. J. Reed. <f Purdue university, says in part: '‘Striped cucumber beetles are avoided by late planting. As earlii ness is not important, this precaution 1 affords the easiest way to avoid this . garden pest. "When the striped beetles attack plants, they are best handled by i sprinkling slacked lime and carbolic acid around the hills, taking care not |to get too much on the plants. The I odor drives the beetle away. “Cucumbers do not grow well except on rich, moist ground in the garden and are often given extra fertilization in the hill and so supply both moisture and fertilizer, a half barrel is often sunk in the ground, filled wi'h manure and watered occasionally. The cucumbers are planted around the outside. “To maintain production, cucumbers must be gathered every day.” . o— — WHAT IS THE FLAG? Pnem read by Dr. H. O. Jones in address at Berne. Sunday afternoon: Tell me about the flag be said And why men wave their hats and Whenever it is drawing near; And so we stopped undressing then , To talk about the time when men Were facing cannon, shot and shell To serve the flag we love so well. I told him of the men who died In frozen wood and country side l ong years ago in battle grim, To keep a flag like that for him; I told him all about the stars The spotless white and crimson stars. Let no one tell you as you grow, That nothing to the flag you owe; Let no one whisper that it means But pleasant days and peaceful dreams, And merely calls to mind a land Where wealth abounds on every hand. Because no more that flag will fly Wh n men for it refuse to die; find what they dreamed of and they sought As bitterly they bled and fought. And it may be, said I, that you Must some day serve that banner, too, And then it' such a day should come. That sound again the stirring drum. And blows once more the martial fife. Be not a slave to peaceful life; As bey were men. you be a man. And give that flag the best you can. —o NOTICE TO ICE CONSUMERS. Usually its danger signals ire backache, pain here or there, swollen cet or ankles, rheumatic twinges or s;>ots appearing before the eyes. "The very best remedy is this: Eat meat but once a day or not at all. Plenty of outdoor exercise, and drink pure water frequently. Before meals take a tittle Anuric, the great uric acid neutralizer that is easily obtained at the drug store. When you have dizziness, chills or sweating worn’, or dragging pains in back, try this wonderful enemy to uric acid, which Dr. Pierce of Buffalo, N. Y., discovered and named Anuric. Anuric, more potent than lithia, dissolves uric acid as hot water does sugar.” YOUNG GIRLS JUST COMING INTO WOMANHOOD.
