DON'T GET HYSTERICAL: — It is estimated that over nine billions of dollars will be spent in Ute United States by our allies during tlie next twelve months. How in the world is this going to hurt business? As a matter of tact it is not. but will give the man and woman who work for a living the best incomes they have ever had and that iTgiit now when the country is at war Timidity has been preached since the di< laration of war We have been advised j»y longhaired editors and specialists of the daily press we must economize, wear old clothing, go without new hats, shoes and the other comforts of life - generally act as if the end of the world were at hand, simply because this great powerful nation has joined some other powerful nations, to put the finishing touch on one or two less powerful nations There is no doubt of a need for common sense and good business .judgment on the part of the people and they wiM show it. As far as ready money is concerned, the country is entering on a period unusual and without precedent. Billions of dollars of government money are being and will be poured out amt' they will be spent in this country. All that is needed to make this a most prosperous country right now is the exercise of a little judgment by every one and this'inefwles the alarmist more than all the rest. There is only one factof which cm prevent this wonderful ,ra of prosperity and that is timidity which causes capital to hide itself in a cellar of darkness at the first whisper of alarm. If you bruise your finger, you do not put a tourniquet about your waist to stop the flow of blood, do you? We havf a little bruise but that is no reason why we should tie up the < irculation of all our vast wealth to heal it. ' Stop buying hats and ypu will throw thousands engaged in this industry out of work. Stop buying clothing and other thousands will have to stop w-ork. Stop buying hardware and stoves and still more will be in the lists of unemployed. Economize in any of dozens of different directions and you will throw odt of work dozens of different groups of workers. If you did this what do you think the effect would be upon you? ' Force hard times, hoard your money and force the lack of employment

on ethers of the nation and you will sutler. | 1f you go along in the usual common sense way, spending as usual a ■ fair share of what you earn and saving the reel, this country will not be troubled with any financial war prob-b-m Strenuous bard times, real disaster. can only come from foolish economy and unwise, aimless, hysterical saving. American and Hardware Record. Decoration Day is a holiday but not one of the ones when you are expect<<d to amuse yourself as on others. It is a day for paying honor to the sol dier. living and dead, and every citizen should join in this great event, of particular significance at this time, the eve of <.... criptive registration and preparation fir the entrance of the United Stall < ..ito the world war with the greatest army ever presented. The day should be fittingly .observed in this county : nd we are sure it will be. Have you bought your Liberty Bond? It s a safe place to put your money, will bring you good returns without expense of. any kind after the original investment, will aid the government when they need it and appreciate it and you ought to do it if you can. The bonds can be secured in denominations of from $50.00 to SI,OOO. The Y. M C. A. fund is nearing the minimum of SI,OOO asked from this county. If you haven’t given you should Ao so yet. for it won’t hurt if the fund is a little over subscribed k goes for a mighty good cause -to keep the soldier boys clean.

It has become necessary that we again call attention to the road laws, relative to giving halt of the road way when you meet any one. 1 am chased almost oft the road nearly every day by fellow-drivers whom we call "road hogs.’ for short. No, this is not necessary. Turn over and be decent. Then we will think you have the right spirit, and by so doing you will avoid accidents. Also it is necessary to mention the speed law. which is not to exceed twenty-five miles per hour on any highway and in towns you must slow up as lives are being endangered every day.
It has come to my notice that there is a good bit of racing on our roads, especially coming in and out of Decatur. It is mostly by young boys, driving "father's" car. and part of tlif time they get there abreast, and when you don't where to go -to get out of the way. This is a bad practice and must be stopped in order that sensible people can go out riding and feel sate. This occurs mostly of evenings and nights. The one coming to my notice was a large Auburn and a Paige. It will be necesary to use the law if it does not cease, and 1 hope to have the early co-operation of all the ifficers in the county to assist in this matter. All assistant superintendents on roads are hereby notified to arrest or turn in the evidence of any case which may come to their notice. mentioned violations have xcurred around Decatur, Monroe, Bern, and Geneva. Please comply and we can all have our rides and not get hurt. Yours sincerely JIM A. HENDRCKS. Highway Superintendent. TO HOLD CONVENTION. The use of this educational film was produced through the influence of our local monument dealers and our citizens will have an unusual opportunity to see the famous Barre granite quarries and manufacturing plants in operation This reel will be shown shown tonight in addition to the usual high class program at the Crystal. Barre, Vermont, the granite center of the world, is nestled among the rugged and beautiful green mountains and produces over $7,000.00(1 worth of memorials annually. The quarrying of immense granite blocks, the operation of breaking them free from nature's berth and raising them to the ground from the quarry holes over 200 feet deep are depicted, as well as the different manufacturing processes which include large granite saws, turning lathes, polishing machines, surfacing machines, and lettering of granite. The film affords an idea as to how nature formed in those beautiful mountains that everlasting granite, and how man's inventive power created wonderul machinery for its transformation into beautiful works of art. Many of the beautiful monuments erected in Adams county have been manufactured from this “Rock Eternal" by the Wemhoff Monumental Works. The local firm maintains an office in Fort and has erected in the cemeteries of that city hundreds of monuments of this celebrated material. Notable among the large monuments erected in Lindenwood cemetery, Fort Wayne, by our local dealers is the W. •E. Mossman me-
