Within a week work on the registration of those qualified will begin in lt:jtliana. giving the government a systematic idea of the lighting str< ngth' and a fair and methodical plan of pro- 1 ceedure. Though the attendance at th ■ | I school house meeting last night would not indicate very great interest we are. sure that ouf people desire a r< tl ; school house, one that will be tilts i:passed anywhere for convenience, a.t 11 one that we can be proud of for uranyl years. We hojie and believe that at I the next meeting every one who favor a building complete and up to date I will aid by their presence. Acre riling to press report? Fran i ■>' Howard, a Decatur man. was one ,-f the gunners aboard the Mongol); which fired the first shot in the great war and the shot counted, cutting ~-f the periscope of a submarine at a dt.-l tance of 1.000 yards. When I n ie Sam .- men get to going the world w.l have further proof of the ability >f these ragged sons who know how to fight and have*the eouragt and th brains to meet any situation. The total number of lots to be cu’. ■ tivated in Indianapolis this year ' over 10.000, equal to sixteen hundred I acres. Think of what this means i’’ carried out everywhere. How does Decatur stack up proportionately wit!, the pattern fixed in the capital tit.'? What is there we can do to help thi - greatest of till undertakings to f< d the world? Its a gigantic oppurtuu’ty ami one in which this city and eoun'y' wants to and w ill do her part. A leading republican yesterday w r. i ed Congressman Vestal that he h :d carefully investigated and found th..' I the people of this county are almost ' unanimously against the conscription] bill. We believe he is wrong in *11: 1 opinion and we believe he was this] misleading our congressman. Oir* people are square and they only ask such a system as is fair. The volunteer method of securing an army is a •wrong and our people do not stand for .it when they understand it. The government ought to have a registration of those men of fighting age so that they can select those who cm best serve their country by going t > the front as w. Il as those who can render the greatest good by staying a! home.
