HARVESTING TREES An Important Winter Industry ir New England. e 1 "■' ■■ 1 ■■ Balsam Kir Most Popular Because ol Its Symmetry and Almost Perfect Shape—Shipped to Big Eastern Cities. HROUGHOUT New Englund, and especialr■ ly In Maine, where, a Study by the forest fi, ‘ r 'i<’e shows, balsam iirs grow to best advantage, the annual cutting and shipment of this ideal Cliristmns tree is an important early winter industry. Most ot the hundreds of thousands of tinsel-coverc:! trees that .-ire set up each Christmas season in the homes of Boston. New York and Philadelphia are balsam ties, and many of the selected specimens are even shipped from their places of growth to such cities as Baltimore. Washington; Uliicngo and the cities of the middlq West. Tlie reason for the great popularity of the balsam fir as a Christmas tree is its symmetrical and practically perfect conical shape. Thar the aid of this Christmas tree pur excellence in carrying out the customary observance of Christmas may he had for a number of seasons yet is indicated by the report of the forest service, which estimates that the total stand <>t balsam fir throughout its vkL > & .. There is a growing demand for the woods, however, for a variety ot uses, and it is figured that something like 175,000,000 board feet are being cut in the United Slates annually. Many thousands of feet of this cut go to satisfy the Christmas demands. Bui it is nor only as the burden bearer of gifts that the balsam fir contributes to Christmas observances. It idso serves in less easily recognized terms. Its white, straight-grained wood has come'to be used more and more in the manufacture of toys that hang from the branches of its younger fellows and from the branches of the other evergreens that are widely used in many parts of the country. The wood of the balsam fir is used to a large extent, also, in the manufacture or excelsior, of which thousands of tons are used each holiday season for packing gifts that are sent by express and mall. - Balsam fir is the source, too, of the wood from which are imide many ol the food containers, such as fruit baskets and butter boxes, in which maI tenuis for the Christmas dintier are brought to the market, the tastelessin ss of the wood making it unsurpassed for such uses. Finally, the balsam fir is being increasingly used for tin- manufacture of paper, and this, wrapped around thousands of holiday packages, adds still another chapter to the list ot the tree’s almost indispensable usefulness as a factor in Christmas observances. Juvenile Sophistication. “I told my youngest son there wasn’t any Santa Claus.” “Did he seem sorry?” “No. Said he knew it nil the time, but was trying to keep it from me so as not to spoil my Christmas.” < Useful Christmas Plant, Cyclamen Is one of the most useful Christmas plants. It comes in various colors and if kept iu a room that ’« not too dry er warm will bloom ser-1 , era! weeks.
