Baumgartner and Bunn, Aucts. John H. Starost, Clerk. CRUELTY TO ANIMALS—HORSE OWNERS READ THIS. The art and science of horseshoeing is a matter of the greatest importance so far as successful utilization of the horse is concerned, and if the horse's rights were respected, his usefulness would be extended. We ought to remember that horses are, and always have, played an important part. We owe a great debt to our horses for service, both in time of peace and war. Let us pray that all men and women interest themselves and see to it that the rights of our dumb brothers (the horse) are respected. If there is a human society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, at times I think they are neglecting their duties. You should not offer your horses food that is not fit to eat, just because it is cheap and has the name of hay and grain. You should not have him shod with shoes that are inconvenient for him to wear, because some smithshop makes it appear that their place of business is like a bargain counter. Whenever things appear in horseshoeing. you should know at once that there must be something wrong with the man or his goods. There are men in the horseshoeing business who have surely missed their calling. They should have been agents for some fake institution, rather than to be patronized as hovseshoers, because they are misleading the public; they are a disgrace to the science of shoeing, they are poison to the horse, like a red rag is to a bull.
