Several carloads of democrats from here will go to Berne tonight for the democratic doings there. Mrs. Amos Yoder of Seventh street is confined to her bed seriusly ill with a complication of diseases. John Bolinger, the well known mason contractor is able to be up town for a few hours each day. Mrs. R. B. Sprague of 710 West Marshall street is seriously ill of pneumoniaj Mrs. Lu|u Swearinger is the nurse. Workmen are getting the sugar house ready to care for the big best harvest which will commence within two or three weeks, and which will keep the factory busy for two or three months. . Peterson of this city was a member of the party ' aboard the Hughes “Special” through- Indiana yesterday, making New Castle, Anderson Kokomo and Elwood. He came through to Berne with Albeit Vestal, republican nominee for congress, where a meeting was held last night. Mr. Vestal will close his Adams county campaign with a meeting at Geneva tonight.

A. P. Spunger of Berne was a business visitor in Decatur today. Mrs. Dan Tyndall of Decatur si>ent part of the week visiting with her parents, Mr and Mrs. C. G. Egly of Berne. Next Wednesday night the Rebekah lodge of this city will go to Berne where they will Rive an exemplification of the degree for the Berne lodge. Steve Meade, of the Cincinnati Enquirer is gathering a straw vote here today, results of which will be published in that paper next week. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Downs and sons left this morning for Idaville, Indiana where they will tomorrow attend the Golden wedding anniversary of Mr. Downs parents. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Weber and Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Weber of lndi.\iap,)liiare in the city visiting witli thrir daughter and niece, Mrs. Wai Wemhoff. Harold Graham, son of L. A. Graham, is home for a visit over Sunday with his parents. He is employe 1 in the Maxwell Motor Car company’s plant at Newcastle, Indiana. Quite a number from here attended the first Denny meeting in the county held at Geneva last night. A‘ large crowd was out and Judge Donney talked for an hour and a half on' the issues of -the campaign. Mr. Denney speaks at Berne tonight and several will attend from here. October_9lh is fire prevention day and the state fire marshal is trying to have every school celebrate the day, in that every student make a thorough inspection of his own home and make a written report of all hazzards he finds there. No concert'd action has been taken heye yet. but observance of the day in the schools will probably be arranged for.
Charles Morrison of Pleasant Mills was a business visitor In the city today. Jesse Steelo of St. Mary’s township was in town today to attend to business. The mission services tonight at the St. Mary's Catholic church are for the men only. Attorney Guy Colerick of Ft. Wayne was looking after business .matters here this afternoon. Fred Schaub is at home from his trip on the road for an over-Sunday visit. A fancy glassware merchant did a slow business on the corner of Second and Madison streets this afternoon. Several from here attended the democratic rally at Kingsland last night and helped to raise the old hicory pole. Jim Coverdale who is employed at the Rich Hotel at Fort Wayne was here today for a few hours. Quite a delegation from here will attend the Wilson meeting at Indianapolis October 12th and plans are being made now. Father Max Benzinger of Hesse Cassel is in the city assisting at the mission services at the St. Mary’s Catholic church. A number of out of town priests will assist at the closing of Forty hours and mission services Sunday evening at the St. Mtfry’s Catholic church. A card from Daniel Sprang says they will start home from Oden, Mich., Monday, after several months at that popular resort. They will make the trip home by auto. John MOsure, of French township, democratic nominee for county auditor, was here today to confer with County Chairman Heller concerning registration day in his township. Saturday October 7 has been set aside by Governor Ralston by proclamation as Riley Day on which dare he urges fitting observance through--out the state of the memory of the Hoosier poet. • Attorney J. C. Sutton has been suffering from an attack of grippe this week but has managed to keep going most of the time. He was at the office today but not feeling just the best in the world. The National Tribune, a paper printed at Washington, D. C.. with republican tendencies, gives much of the credit for the widows’ pension bill recently passed to Senators Kern and Taggart of Indiana. Mr. Mead, representing the Cincinnati Enquirer was here today to take a straw vote for use tn that paper. -The ballots were distributed by Mr. Mead and collected by him and every effort made to make the vote show possible results. The straw vote taken in Richmond a republican stronghold, shows a difference between Hughes and Wilson of but six votes, the democratic candidate winning in nearly every place polled excepting the hotel and one factory, in which the vote was close. The straw vote in Ohio as shown in the Enquirer is practically even at this time. G COURT HOUSE NEWS.
