IT’S THE FEMALE THAT BITES. Male Mosquito is a Gentleman, but His Wife Feasts on Our Ankles. That the female species of the culex pungens, better known in New’ Jersey by the sobriquet of “ornery mosquito,’’ is responsible for the torture inflicted on the ankles of debutantes. and divers other parts of the anatomy of human beings, was the statement made here by Dr. Hugo Kahl, entomologist of Carnegie museum. The professor, wise in the lore of the culex pungens, declared that the male mosquito was a perfect gentleman. a laborer, who sought his free lunch in the flower bed. and not on the ankle bones of the debutantes. Like the celebrated bee, he lives on sweets. The lady mosquito, says Dr. Kahl, is the pest. She it is, who, with abuses, plunges the needlelike tube in her proboscis into the human epidermis and extracts her drop of blood. The “she” is the big worry of the summer resort. Singularly, aside from annoying human beings, the insect, dipterous, by the classification of the scientist, has no purpose in life other than to be food for birds and fishes. —Pittsburgh Dispatch.
