I HENRY CLAY BARNABEE—MASTER OF MIRTH IN MUSIC ■ America’s Master of Mirth is the loving title given to Henry Clay Barnabee, known in American and Europe as one of the most active singers of opera roles of his time. He was the orignlal sheriff of Nottingham In “Robin Hood.” and player Sir Jo- > seph Porter in "Pinafore." the first time It was presented in America. He ' was for over sixty years known as the only man who could song "The Cork Leg" and the ballad “O Loving Heart. Trust On.” written for him by Gottschalk, the famous composer. Shortly after the civil war Mr. Bari nabee began playing with the Boston Museum company and later began his work as an entertainer, making a clr- , cuit of minor cities and towns, com- j billing music and demlamations. Mr. Barnabee was a leading spirit of the old Boston Ideal Opera company, which continued for many yArs as one of the most popular musical organizations ever known to American opeta lovers. In later life he retained his splendid quality of voice still singing many of the songs which he made famous. "O Loving Heart, Trust on." and i others of the Barnabee songs are to Ibe found in that beautiful volume, | 'Heart Songs", now being disrtibut°d ‘by this paper. Look elsewhere for the coupon giving the terms to our 1 readers. A POPULAR DELUSION CONCERNING AN OLD SONG. “Cornin’ Thro’ the Rye”—as now I printed and sung, is usually attributed jto Robert Burns—but as a matter of 1 fact, only the first four lines are by I Burns, the remainder having been added by John Walter, an Edinburg musician and music seller, who later moved to London. The air to which “Cornin’ Thro’ ti’c Rye" has become familiar to thousan Is of Americans — and to which it is now sung,— Is an old melody. “The Miller’s Daughter”— somewhat modified by Walter. People generally, and the artist ard commentator who have followed su ; t. have taken it for granted that the song referred to crossing a field of rye. But the authentic version, however, shows that it refers to the fording of the River Rye, where certain stepping stones allowed the barefooted Highland Lassies to cross none the worse for the*shallow water that swirled about their pretty ankles. This world-famous melody is to I e; found in the wonderful collection :-n-| titled “Heart Bongs"— now offered by ’ this paper to its readers on terms that make it practically a gift. Elsewhere ■ ; n today’s issue is printed the coupon . with music border that explains how phis song book may be obtained. We ■ ! commend to every subscriber this ••n- [ usual opportunity of procuring a book that will be a source of pleasure in 111 the years to come. —-—n — ■. - —■ PLEN TY OP MONEY To loan on farms. 10 years' time , without renewal, tin commission, par i ! tial payments any time. • 297tf ERWIN OFFICE WANTED i A Boy or Young Man.
