Everything that goes to make up a perfect combination of affairs seems to be with us. The products of the soil, the representatives of real wealth, are all that we could wish, and in view of the prospective demands of the world, are of more importance this year than ever before. This, of course, makes for the strong est foundations. But this is only one phase of it all. As a nation we are in a position to take advantage of all our opportunities, and we are prepar ed to do so. We never knew our abilities because we were never put to the test before. The whole world today recognizes our power, financially and commercially. Our profits from the European war are accumulating and are giving us more courage in new undertakings. This is beginning to show already, and the outlook is for a tremendous growth in this direction. It is difficult to set the limit for this onward push. But with all this has come an enormous speculative wave. Thus far it has been largely specialized, but it is spreading and gathering momentum, and the end no one can yet see. There has been selling and good selling all the time, but it has been absorbed as the parched land absorbs the grain. There will come a time when prices will advance harder, though there are no signs as yet that the general current has changed. Reactions have ceased to stimulate liquidation, in fact reactions only induce a new wave of buy ing. General business sentiment is steadily growing stronger, because people can begin tn see the improvement. The busier people are the less time they have to hunt for the weak places, in fact, their very energy strengthens tfie weak places.— Finance. A little sample of Indian summer and most aceptable to the average person who would be satisfied to have this particular brand of sunshine for the next six months. When you patron y ize a pedler you are almost sure to get the worst of the trade and you could n't find the fellow again if you had - to. If you deal with the home merchant you have his guarantee back of B the deal. s The indictment against Thomas Tag- ' gart was dismissed today because of . a lack of evidence, as per the state--1 meat of Mr. Rucker, the prosecuting attorney. Evidently the school of pcr- • jury, has fallen a victim to the demo- , cratic hard times and suspended operation. If it had worked wouldn’t it have been a glorious means of getting ri ( j of democratic leaders? The democratic state headquarters have reopened with Beranard Korbly, state chairman and A. C. Sallee, secretary, in charge. Personal letters lire being sent out advising early reorganization of the county and district committees in accord with the new primary law where changes are necessary. The state committee will urge that facts concerning the national and state administration be given the voters, realizing that the accomplishments of President Wilson, his congress and of Governor Ralston and the other officials of Indiana will be endorsed by a majority of the people of this county. The Research club met with Mrs. Fred Heuer yesterday afternoon and the paper by Mrs. Mary Eley, who recently returned from a western trip, including a visit at the fa'rs in California, was one of the best ever given. It was most original the subject being “My Impressions of the West”. A number of Mrs. Eley’s letters were published in the Democrat telling of her trip, but the paper was different in that it told of her impressions of the west. Closing with a poem on the states in general, she ended with a verse that gives her opinion of her own state, in comparison with all the ethers; as follows: There is a state in the middle west. Draw your own conclusions, but I like it best No matter where e’er I roam on land or sea, Indiana is good enough for me. REPUBLICANS FOR IT (United Press Service) Washington, Oct. 19, —(Special to Daily Democrat) —Senator Smoot, of Utah, republican senate leader today declared the republicans would support a preparedness policy. Smoot said: “Congress will adopt a navy program, and provide a small increase in the army, it will provide more dreadnaughts, a large number of submarines, swift cruisers and battle cruisers above all. Moreover we must provide an ample supply of ammunition for both array and navy. The lack of amunition has been little short of criminal.” Defeat of the government ship purchase bill was predicted by Smoot. PRESIDENT VOTES. (United Press Service) Princeton, N. J., Oct. 19 —(Special to Daily Democrat) —President Wilson added one vote for suffrage in NewJersey when he casf his ballot in the little fire house booth below the Princeton campus at one- o’clock this afternoon. This is the first time in history that an executive of a wprld nation has taken his stand for the newer and broader sphere of woman, yet the event was almost unnoticeable. o For Wayne & Springfield* Ry.
