■■■■■■ ua__. PAPER MUST GiVE NEWS. Il Advice of Dale J. Crlttenberger to Indiana City Editors. Indianapolis, Ind., July 17—(Special Uto Dally Democrat t—Dale J. Crlttenberger, auditor of state, and editor of the Anderson Bulletin, was the headliner at today's meeting here of the Indiana City Editors' association at • the Hotel Washington. Mr. Crlttenberger talked on the subject, “How 1 to Make a Newspaper Pay." To make a newspaper pay, said Mr. Crlttenberger. it is first necessary to understand that it must be a NEWS paper. Eighty per cent of the energy and effort should be devoted to the news department, he said. Once the newspaper has fulfilled its chief func- • tion of distributing news to the satisfaction of a community, he said, the circulation and advertising will come as a natural result. Mr. Crlttenberger said he did not build tip the circulation. “I held only one circulation con test in ray life as an editor," he said significantly. “These contests take money out of a community.” The city editors listened to a complete program today. Walter Radcliffe, of the Newcastle Courier, talked on "The Other Fellow;” John W. Chandler of the Wabash Plain Dealer spoke on "Feature Stories;" Vaughn Root of the LaPorte'Herald outlined his idea of what church news should be; Earl Williams this afternoon told of "News Resources." The editors inspected the offices aid mechanical departments of the Indianapolis News and the Indiana Times. Following the afternoon session and the selection of the meeting dace for the January session the convention adjourned. An informal luncheon will be given tonight. WANTED—GirI for general housework.
