OUNCE OF PREVENTION WORTH POUNDS OF CURL. Notice to Correspondent*. (You arc invited to write to the editor of the Tuberculosis Department of the Dally Democrat on any pha'e of the tuberculosis problem. Your name will not be used without your permission. Pdease make your questions tftiort. If you desire a personal answer, be sure Io enclose a stamped, -..idressed envelope. This service is absolutely free to the readers of the Daily Democrat.) How is your imagination working today? Let's try it out for a moment on a thing so stupendous that your sensibilities are almost sure to Ip shocked into temporary numbness. Can you imagine a gigantic, awe-in-spiring funeral procession, containing 25,511 hearses? Can you see in your mind's eye the thousands, yes, the hundreds of thousands of cabs and other vehicles conveying the friends of the silent ones who are taking their last earthly ride? Further than the eye can reach, the gloom surrounded cortege, winds over hill ana dale,, across valley and mountain. It stretches from New York 1c San Francisco and back across the country to Washington. D. C. It if cue of the blackest blots in the u orld’s history. It is the visible token of Indiana's failure to grasp the full importance of human life. The only “unreal” thing about this vision in the grouping of 25,511 real funeral processions that actually fol b wed that many Indiana victims o' tuberculosis to the cemetery in the i ast six weeks. Thousands of these victims of a preventable disease were ueful, producing members of the community in which they lived. Questions and Answers. Dear Editor;—!. Do you consider tuberculosis of the bowels more serious than tuberculosis of the lung? 2. Is there any cure for it? 3. Is it hard er to treat? 4. Will you kindly dis < uss its treatment in your Tuberculosis Department? Thanking you for any information you may give on this subject, I am
A READER. 1. Yes. 1 2. Yes. 3. Intestinal tuberculosis is curable and is treated in a general way as is the dis ease in any part of the body. If the tubercles are on the peritoneum or covering cf the bowel the treatment is surgical and consists of opening and closing the abdomen, disturbing nothing. Air striking the part results in a cure. If the tubercles are in the h ucous lining of the intestines attention must be paid to diet and inten final antiseptic medication. But above all, air, rest, nutritous food and good habits are to be relied upon. Don’t neglect the teeth. To the Editor: —Should a person un consciously exert himself to a greater degree than he is able to withstand how soon would he realize it, and would a rise in temperature be an indication if he felt as good as usual otherwise? J. H. Rise in temperature after exertion which does not quickly return to normal, is a good indication of over-exer-tion; rapid pulse is another: undue shortness of breath and fatigue are others. If such over-exertion is persisted in, loss of weight and increased c- ugh and expectoration are often added to the other signs of increased activity. Dear Tuberculosis Editor: —Should a tuberculosis person try to stop his cough and the bringing of muctft or is it best to let the cough, etc., take its natural course? M. A.
A patient with tuberculosis should attempt to control his cough. A certain amount of cough and expectoration is often necessary, but regular habits of control can often he formed with considerable benefit. 0 — For Wayne & Springfield Ry. Company. TIME TABLE.
