Charles Brodbeck arrived from Akron, Ohio, Saturday for a visit with relatives and friends. The Misses Frances Miller and Marjory Meyers went to Fort Wayne Saturday noon for a visit. Mrs. Fred Schinner and son Arthur and daughter Martha of Willshire were visitors in the city. , The banks and union barber shops observed Labor day by closing their respective place of business. Otto and John Wemhoff of Fort Wayne are making an over Labor day visit in the city with relatives and friends. Ray Butler, who spent the summer at Elwood, came home to attend school this winter. He is a son of Omer Butler. Miss Agnes Krick came home from Gary for a visit over Sunday and today with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Krick. Mrs. V. S. Drummond and her brother. Henry Vian and family left for St. Henry, Ohio, to visit with his parents. Thomas L. Burns of Fort Wayne spent Sunday in this City visiting Ills daughter, Miss Mabel Burns. Mrs. Lase Baker went to Ft. Wayne today to visit with Mrs. Thomas and to see the Labor day parade. Miss Lucile Curran returned to Lima, Ohio, after a visit wtih her cousin, Miss Mary Corbett. Leo Corbett returned to Mansfield, Ohio, after a visit here with his uncle, T. C. Corbett, and family. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Buettener and sons Elmer, Oscar and Walter of Union township were business visitors in the city Saturday. Mrs. H. L. Buuck and Mrs. Maria Hoffman and Miss Lucy Dilling of Preble were numbered among the visitors in the city Saturday. Mrs. W. E Lewis of Fort Wayne was here to attend the fnueral of Lorenzo Cherryholmes held Saturday afternoon from'the Methodist church. Olen Baker, saleman for the Schafer Saddlery Company arrived home Saturday three weeks’ trip through Illinois. He left again today. Robert Blackburn and Jacob Grim went to Ft. Wayne this morning where they attended the G. A. R. and old soldier festivities at Robison park. The funeral of Mrs. Susannah Johnson of Monroe was held this afternoon from the Monroe M. E. church with the Rev. Wyer of Lima, Ohio, officiating. J. D. Hale went to Rome City this morning where he will spend a week or longer at his cottage. Mrs. Hale will join her husband the last of the week. Mrs. D. C. Laizure and daughter Ruby of Monroe and their guests Mrs. C. L. Silvers and son Donald of Winchester were visitors in the city Sat urday.
Dr. and Mrs. Fred I. Patterson and Mr. and Mrs. Marton Stutts and daughter returned from a delightful six days trip to Cleveland, Detroit and other lake cities. Miss Agnes Meibers returned from a month’s visit in Rome City at the Meibers cottage. She resumed her work as stenoprapher at the Peterson & Moran office. Carl Smith, who lias been visiting in the city with his parents and otiicr friends, left this morning for Michigan, where he will resume his duties in the lumber business. Mrs. Anna Bridegam of Churubusco arrived for a visit with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Adam Deam. This was the first time in sixteen years that the ladies had seen each other. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Tonnelier, daughters, Rose and Bess, and son, Dick, and their guest, Miss Helen Weber, of Indianapolis, have returned from Rome City, where they spent the week. Mrs. Ernst Steele and children, Elizabeth and Robert, returned Saturday noon to LaPorte after a four weeks’ visit here with her mother. Mrs. Geo. Chronister and the D. V. Steele family and others. Mrs. John Herman and children returned to St. Henry, Ohio. Her son. Adrian, who lias been ill, remained here witli his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Meyers, and will take medical treatment. Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Adams will leave Saturday afternoon for a visit witli friends at Battie Creek. Mich., Mr. Adams will return Tuesday and Mrs. Adams will go to Flint for a visit witli her father. The loss sustained ny Mrs. Mary J. Niblick in the burning of the barn on iier farm in Berne recently lias been ajusted for SSOO by the Home insurance of which Gallogley & Johnson are local agents. Mrs. B. B. TJhl and children, Mary Catherine, Jessie May and Albert, left today for Toledo, Ohio, to join Mr. Uhl in making that, place their home. They visited here witli her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Christen, of North Secon'd Mrs. Winfield Russell went to Rome City this morning, where she met her son, Artiiur, and visited with him through the day. Arthur is now living at. Battle Creek, Mich., and at the present time is on a few days’ business trip. Mr. and Mrs. Botteroff left last night for Pontiac, 111., where Mr. Botterhoff will go into business for himself. While here he was engaged as tinner with Tom Leonard. They occupied the B. W. Sholty suite of furnished rooms while in Decatur. “Tonk” Meibers, the genial and competent stenographer at the Peterson & Moran law office, has returned from a month's vacation spent at Rome City and other places. She reports having had her much needed rest and will be able to be on duty for another year.
The Misses Tillie and Lollle Meibnrs and Kate Sethers are at Rome City visiting. Robert Quinn is some better today after a very bad Saturday and Sunday. His temperature is normal and though quite weak the Improvement, it Is believed, will be permanent. Albert Entzminger, former resident here is visiting friends. He Is now located at Warren, Ohio, and is getting along nicely. He says that city is the best and the most beautiful in the state. Jesse Steele of St. Marys township was in town today to see that his son and daughter entered high school here. Mr. Steele was for many years a teacher of the county and is anxious to educate ills children. Mr. and Mrs. E. Burt, Lenhart entertained at dinner Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. John Gideon, Payne, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Walls, sons, Chester, Marvin Edward and daughter. Margarite, of Toledo, Ohio, and Miss Opal Ball, of Magley, Ind. Miss Georgia Meibers resumed her work this morning at the Deiningcr millinery store after her summer vacation. Miss Meiberc had a most delightful ten weeks’ visit at Princess Anne, Md„ witli relatives, returning home two weeks ago. Postmaster Bosse reports letter remaining uncalled for at the Decatur postoffice for S. E. Adams, Harvey Brodbeck, Mrs. Katharine Close, Ed C. Cramer, Carl Doehrman, Herman Grueb, Rolland Golden, James Harris. Heo. F. Hearth, Mrs. K. Marsh, Horace Miller, S. W. Miller. Hazel Raudebusb, E. E. Stetson, S. S. Specialty Co., Christ Seagrist, Frank Wise. Secretary of State Lew G. Eilingliam who was here Saturday to register left last evening for Winchester and will go on to Indianapolis today. His daughter Miss Winifred and several friends drove up in the car and Mr. Ellinghain and Master Miller went to Winchester with them. The young people accompanied by several from here drove to Fort Wayne where they spent the day at Robinson park. o ARE l£ SESSION Board of County Commissioners is Looking After County Affairs. ■ 'A # SUBWAY IS ORDERED By State Railway Commission as Petitioned for by Fred Hilpert et al.
The board of county commissioners convened this morning in regular session and several matters of importance are before them. The county council will convene tomorrow in regular session to make the appropriations for the year 1915. State Auditor O'Brien tiled his certificate showing that the aggregate assessed valuation of personal property in Adams county as fixed by the assessor and the board of review has been approved and confirmed by the state tax board. The public, service commission has filed a copy of the order rendered by them against the Chicago At. Erie railroad that they build a raised track near Bobo as petitioned lor by Fred Hilpert and 114 others. The subway will be 21 feet high, 16 feet wide and will have clear space underneath it of at least eleven feet. The railroad was ordered to file blue prints and plans by September 1, hut they have not done so. Martin Laughlin, county superintendent of the county farm, filed his quarterly report, which was approved. W. J. Archbold, county treasurer, filed his monthly reports for July and August, which were approved. Extras were allowed on the Henry Heckman and L. W. Franks macadam roads. oDEATH OF BABE.
